why do friends have to sign up for a wp.com account to access my private blog?
-
is it possible to have a password protected blog at wordpress.com where others don’t have to sign up to view it?
Blog url: http://nosignoftheroad.wordpress.com/ -
You could password protect individual posts and pages:
http://en.support.wordpress.com/posts/post-visibility/#password-protect-a-postYour readers would only need the password to view the protected post or page — they wouldn’t need a WordPress.com account.

thanks … that’s helpful.
i’m assuming from your response that there is no way to password the whole blog without my friends becoming wordpress.com users.
-
Yes, that is correct. There is no way to password-protect the entire blog, so folks will need to be WordPress.com users and invited to your blog to view it.
