Why do I get a different editor now when I edit a post?

  • Unknown's avatar

When I edit a post from my dashboard, I get the classic editor. When I edit by viewing the post, clicking my avatar in the menu bar, and choosing Edit, as of today I’m getting a different editor, one that comes up after a “beep beep boop” message displays for a minute.

Why this change? The new editor looks like it has all the stuff I need but … well, why two editors? I’d rather have the classic editor at all times, but at the end of the day I just want a consistent editing experience, not one that differs depending on where I choose to edit from.

    What’s the plan here?

    Hi there,

The new editor you’re seeing is one that our team has been working on, to make it easier for you to manage your sites and blog posts directly from http://wordpress.com/ . When you click the “Edit” links from your posts, that’s the editor you’ll see now. You can also check out the My Sites page to see more of those new features we’re working on.

If you’d like to get back to that classic editor, you can do that with the “Dashboard” link on your My Sites page. You can head to the Posts section to edit your existing posts, or Posts > Add New to create a new one.

But if you’re looking for consistency, I’d recommend trying out the new post editor and seeing if you like using it all the time. If you have feedback about how we could improve the experience there, please let me know! :)

    Hello!

I see that my number one bit of feedback that I was going to give has already been implemented: make the editing area wider. Thanks!

I also think that the “short URL” button on the classic editor didn’t make the transition. I do use that sometimes.

While I’m quite used to the classic editor and could continue using it happily forever, I’m willing to make a shift if that’s the way these winds are a’blowin’. The new editor seems to have everything I need (save the Short URL button), just in a different place from before.

It just slows me down to not have the same editor appear in all places, because I have to adjust my usage. If I’m going to use the new editor, I’d like to have it appear by default everywhere.

    Thanks,
    -Jim

    Hi Jim,

Thanks for that feedback! I’ll definitely mention to our team that you’d like to see that shortlink (short URL) button in the new editor, along with your feedback about wanting to see the same editor consistently.

For now, you can get a post’s shortlink by visiting that post on your blog. When you’re looking at a post, you can use the drop-down menu under your blog title in the top left of your admin bar to find and copy that shortlink: https://cloudup.com/cO-QVxz-C9V

    I hope that helps! :)
