Why do I have to pay $120/year to remove the .wordpress.com from my site?

I already own a domain name and I want to transfer it to WordPress. Why do I have to pay for the membership for $120/year just to transfer it to WordPress?

You need a paid plan to host your domain at WordPress.com. You need to pay pretty much everyone to host a domain. But a (cheaper) Personal plan would work here.
