Why do I have to pay to map my domain when I can just input my DNS into the settings?
-
Maybe I’m just being cheap but is there something else that goes on behind the scenes when mapping that makes them charge us? Because, if i understand this properly, I still have to go into my domain host settings and input the wordpress DNS.
Is the fee just for having the gall to have a different domain host or for some behind the scene work that must be done on WordPress’ behalf.

WordPress.COM needs to configure their servers to match up your custom domain name to the blog here you are mapping to. All hosts do the same thing – but with other hosts like BlueHost the costs of the equivalent of mapping is built into the cost of the hosting package – but since hosting here is free and you are not charged specifically for hosting, WordPress.COM needs to recover some of the costs for the services of special handling of your domain name.
And the upgrades are part of the way they pay for the staff that keep the three massive server farms working and safe from hackers and other bad people
