Why do I have to upgrade to a premium site to use WooCommerce?

  I’ve looked everywhere on the internet, and I see that WooCommerce is free. That said, I’m being told that to use WooCommerce, I need a paid WordPress account? Why is this?

  When creating a website with the hosted version of WordPress (https://wordpress.com/), you need to upgrade to one of the premium plans to use WooCommerce.

  There is an open source version of WordPress (https://wordpress.org/) that you can host with companies like Namecheap, SiteGround, and Bluehost that will enable you to use the WooCommerce plugin for free.
