Why Do I Now Have to Sign-in to "Leave a Reply" ?

  Up until now, people could “leave a reply” on my website without signing-in/registering. Now they have to sign-in/register with Gravatar to leave a reply….why? What’s going on? How can I remove this restriction from my website? Thanks…….

  The vast and overwhelming majority of all so-called information on the internet is spam. Over 80% of all so-called comments submitted to .wordpress.com blogs every day are spam. Spam comes in waves. There are human beings who get paid to post spam. There are robotic programs that post spam. Setting up anonymous commenting is akin to throwing down a welcome mat to spammers and phishers and all their buddies too.

  This page > Settings > Discussion is where you set up defaults for comments.

  _Comment author must fill out name and e-mail
  _Users must be registered and logged in to comment

  Note that the prompt to submit and email address and a website URL will still appear, but providing an email address and logging in are not required, and you cannot change this so the prompt does not appear.

  You can post instructions for your visitors in a text widget if you wish to set up anonymous commenting. That’s easy to do. You copy and paste this into a text widget:

  Readers: Note that the email address and logging in prompts do appear for comments on this blog, but providing an email address and logging in are not required.

  P.S. Do be sure to set up full comment moderation ie. “An administrator must always approve the comment” because anonymous commenting is bound to increase the amount of spam your blog will receive.

  Many thanks. That seems to have done it. Clearly WordPress has made some major changes since I originally set up the site about 7 months ago. Is there a summary somewhere of all the changes that were made?

  With all due respect, my experience was different. Last summer I asked if I could order comments with newest first, and was told (by a Member like yourself) it was impossible. I really appreciate you straightening me out.

  6. Comments should be displayed with the __ comments at the top of each page – This setting allows you to reverse the order of comments. You can display comments in ascending or descending order.
