Why do my posts not post and get labeled "schedule missed"?

  • Unknown's avatar

posts not posting. I get a “missed schedule” message that gives me no indication whatsoever WHY or what the hell I can do about it! What’s the point of the “schedule” function if it won’t schedule. (My “copy a post” function hasn’t been working for months…)

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

You may want to confirm your timezone setting is correct. You can reset your timezone on your blog to reflect the timezone you actually live in. The default timezone is UTC time. You can reset your timezone here > Settings > General
Select the closest city to you in the same timezone you live in in the drop-down menu you see there and then click “save changes”.

NOTE: Scheduled posts are currently only triggered to publish when the first person visits the blog after the scheduled date and time. For now, think of it as “schedule after this time.”

I don’t use “copy a post” myself as I have no need to use it. Are you following this guide? http://en.support.wordpress.com/writing-helper/copy-a-post/ If so what step are you on when things go wrong? Do you get an error messages? If so please post them here.

I’ll tag this thread for Staff assistance with both issues. . Please subscribe to the thread so you are notified when they respond and please be patient while waiting, noting that it’s a long weekend and the response will not be soon.

No error messages. While in dashboard, I click the “copy a post” link under the “all posts” heading, but instead of bringing up the copy a post function (like it used to) it gives me the “new post” window so I have to just re-enter the common information over and over and over again. Not having this function working is a real pain to me! Earlier this year it just suddenly stopped working.

On the other issue, I get that “scheduled posts are currently only triggered to publish when the first person visits the blog after the scheduled date and time.”- but what about the links? I have my WP blog linked to my Facebook page. It is CRUCIAL to me that these links go up IMMEDIATELY on my FB page and Twitter feed. How else are (non-subscribing) people to even KNOW there is a new post for them to read if no link is posted until someone checks in? SOMETHING AIN’T RIGHT HERE… The time zone is correct. I’m guessing that the problem has been that I had too many posts scheduled, and the posting mechanism just shut down. Reduced the number of scheduled posts and it seems to be functioning now. Is there a limit on number of posts you can schedule in advance? Thanks!

    Hi lastcre8iveiconoclast,

Concerning your copy a post issue, when you click that option, a box will open up below your editor window that allows you to choose which post to copy:

As far as scheduled posts, the way it works, someone has to visit your site to trigger the scheduled post to publish. If the scheduled time comes and goes without a visit, the scheduled date will be missed until someone new goes to your site.

Thanks jackiedana, but the box you describe DOES NOT OPEN UP when I click that option. That is exactly my point. When I click “copy a post” it opens the “new post” window every time.
On the second issue: timethief made this clear in the thread above. HOWEVER: you both miss my point. For TWO YEARS now, a link would appear on my Facebook page AT THE EXACT TIME I SCHEDULED IT TO PUBLISH. (if the post was scheduled for 12:01, the link would pop up on my FB page AT 12:01.) It is not a matter of visitors to my page making the post visible. I am not even talking about the post. I am talking about the LINKS that get sent to FB and Twitter. Never, NEVER in 2 years have these failed to post… until recently. The “schedule missed” message is a BRAND NEW thing. As such, it CANNOT be caused by lack of visitors. I AM getting visitors. This is not the issue. It’s something else.

The copy a post option will show up in the drop-down window under your editor, in the box “Writing Helper”.

As far as your scheduled posts issue: are the posts themselves being published on schedule, but not posting to Facebook and Twitter? I’m just checking because your Twitter feed shows a number of posts from the past few days.

Since I went back and deleted about 30 scheduled posts, the links (to FB & Twitter) appear to be working. I’m guessing the problem was caused by having over 100 posts scheduled. WP doesn’t appear to like this. I can find no box labelled “writing helper”, but this morning when I tried the copy a post option from the dashboard… it worked again! (mysteriously.) It seems to function intermittently. Thanks so much for your help in trying to resolve these issues. (Though I must say, the “message missed” notification is still a mystery. I typically get hits on my site within 5 minutes of a new day. I had many visitors on the days WP wouldn’t publish my posts, so it absolutely cannot be that issue. It must have been something else. At this point, I am presuming the issue was too many posts scheduled. Don’t know what else to believe…)

Ah, yes, that was the issue. For technical reasons, you should strive to have fewer than 100 scheduled posts at any given time.

Thanks so much for all your help.
