Why do some themes allow for more widgets? Is there a way to over ride this?

    I am currently setting up a blog.
    I am torn between Adelle and Twenty Ten. I prefer how my site looks with Adelle but it isnt allowing me as many widgets as Id like and it says that they are inactive when I go to the layout section
    Twenty Ten appears to allow for more including a secondary widget bar and a footer.
    Is there a way to get all of this on the Adelle one?
    Thanks

    Hi,

    I’m assuming what you mean is you want more room and different areas to place widgets. If that is correct, then yes, you can but it will cost some money.

    If you want to customize one of your themes then you might want to consider paying for the Custom Design upgrade:
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/custom-design/

    It will require adding custom CSS to get the exact look you want.

    Good luck with your blog!

  • Indeed, each theme is different, and what’s available in one (a second sidebar area, for instance) may not be available in another. You can customize a theme further with custom CSS (requiring the Custom Design upgrade and a bit of know-how, as mentioned by the poster above).

    You can also use various filters in the Theme Showcase to find themes as well (ie, perhaps themes with four columns offer more options for you: http://theme.wordpress.com/themes/features/four-columns/).

    Please know that when it comes to widgets, less is more. Using many widgets:

    • slows down page loading time and we have only 3 -4 seconds before people stop waiting and click out;
    • increases the risk creating an amateurish appearance;
    • increase the risk of distracting readers away from reading your valuable content in posts.

    The classic mistake I see beginner bloggers make is to create a blog full of decorative, distracting and useless sidebar and footer tat. The test for whether or not to add a widget or any sidebar link to your blog is to answer these questions:

    1. Will adding this widget or link to my sidebar provide my visitor’s access to blog content that’s not found on the front page?
    2. Will adding this widget or link to my sidebar provide my visitor’s access to additional related resources beyond my blog?
    3. If your self-honest answers to those question reveals that any widget does not accomplish the foregoing , then do not add it.
