Why do you keep telling me to update Safari?

  • Unknown's avatar

When I go to the dashboard, there is a notice that I’m using an old version of Safari. According to Software Update, all the software on my computer (eMac running 10.5.8) is up to date. Also, the blog is not displaying correctly in Safari, but is displaying correctly in Firefox.

This started a few weeks ago.

  • Well, the latest version of Safari is 5.1, but the last version to support 10.5.x was 5.06, so you don’t actually have the lastest version.

There’s a “dismiss” link at the bottom of the notice to remove it, but you might want to consider trying a more up-to-date browser.

So you accept I have the latest version of Safari available without going out and buying a new computer ? There must be a LOT of people still using this version.

Also, can I assume that whatever you’ve changed will also have broken my blog for anyone else viewing it who hasn’t bought a newish Mac ?

  • All we did was add a notice to the Dashboard encouraging users to use the latest possible version of their browser.

Most browser updates these days are security updates, so using an out-of-date version is actually unsafe.

I do acknowledge that Safari 5.06 is the lastest that you are capable of running, but it’s not actually the latest version. For that, you can click the Dismiss link, but I do encourage you to try a more recent and secure browser that supports your version of OS X, like Chrome: http://www.google.com/chrome/

Your blog seems to be displaying properly for me, but that could be because I’m using Safari 5.1. I no longer have a copy of Safari 5.06 to test from, though I can guarantee that we made no changes to the front end of your blog, we just added this notice to your Dashboard.
