  Hi WordPress,

  Why would you need my phone number when I want to setup a personal blog?

  Hi @winterspell34, there are a few instances where we’d need a phone number.

  If you’re registering a custom domain, ICANN requires a phone number. We use whois data protection so it doesn’t go public.

  If you’re adding a phone number for two-step authentication, we would need it to send codes.

  If your situation isn’t one of those, let us know and we’ll have a look.
