Why does ‘Attempt Block Recovery’ happen a lot randomly when editing?

  • Unknown's avatar

    Sometimes it’s fine when saved.
Othertimes when editing, usually text/paragraph’s will mention:

This block contains unexpected or invalid content.

    Attempt Block Recovery

When I recover it, it doesnt work.
What can I do to fix this so it doesnt happen in the future and what am I editing wrong?
All I’m doing really is resizing the block and changing font appearance.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

All of a sudden when I came back to edit my website, all these “attempt block recovery” messages showed.
And now my header and footer have dissapeared, as well as some text.
Top image is what is should/did look like, and bottom image in in the Edit.

What is going on and why does it do this?
Clicking attempt block recovery doesnt fix this.

Website is suddenly back as I clicked ‘reapply’ via the old ‘Customize’ tab, but this has scared me.
    Why has/did this happened?

  • Hi! Just to check, does this happen with specific blocks? For example, does it occur with paragraph blocks in particular, or other types of blocks?

If you have any example page or post where you see the error, please do share it with us so we can help check.

    Hey Staff.

I noticed it happening with ‘Paragraph’ blocks on my home page only.
My header also had disappeared randomy (I cannot say why, but maybe becuase of the blocks issue)

Clicking resolved on said blocks, which showed me the supposed ‘edited’ HTML (see image below as e.g), has fixed all the issues (for now.)
Even though I dont know how to code, and so I didnt even touch any code on my blocks.

There are no live example pages as all is fine (and unsure how I’d show you invalid blocks on a live post/website?).

Thanks for that! Are you composing your posts in a different editor or word processor and pasting them into the WordPress block editor? If so, it could be retaining formatting that isn’t compatible with the block editor.

If you’re not doing that, can you let us know how you typically compose a new post and if you change any block font settings each time?

    Thanks!

    Hi Heroponriki
I am not using/editing in another editor or word processor.

What I was doing was clicking + Add block> Add ‘Paragraph’>Filling paragraph with text>Changing the block’s Dimensions (padding/margin) + font colour.
This was all within the ‘Block’ settings.

I did at somepoint use the old ‘classic view’ to change specific text’s (in a sentence) colours, but that was for one block (which is understandable if it causes block recover).
However I repeat, I had issues with about 3-5 blocks on said home page. Not just one.

  • Hi @cpanay1 , I was able to duplicate this on a test site. I’m not sure what’s causing the blocks to stop validating, but we’ll do some digging.

For now, I think if you just ignore the messages, you’ll be able to save. The blocks that have problems all seem to be related to spacing, and saving it as as won’t break anything further.

We’ll let you know what we find.

  • Quick question on this: did you build this page by picking a pattern? If you can share a little about how you got this particular layout, that will help. If it’s an issue in that layout for example, we’ll want to go back to the source.

Hi supernovia, I built this page by picking a Theme, if that answers it?
The only things drastically different on my current site is a new header + footter.

    However it’s just happened again.
I go to ‘edit’ for the home page and look: (I’ve had to zoom out to capture the whole page).
I havent touched my site for 2 days. When I last left it, it was fine.
Now going into edit has caused all this.
Even the header + footer has drastically dissappeared as mentioned!

  • Unknown's avatar

@supernovia ok something odd is happening.
I checked my site in ‘edit site’ mode (for home page) on Firefox and Edge and it produced no issues.
    All blocks/header/footer were there.

I then re-checked it on Chrome (twice), and it was back to normal!!
What on earth is going on?

  • Hi there, in the time that we have been troubleshooting your issue we’ve been working to find a way to replicate what you see on our end, so that we can have our developers take a look.

However, it’s possible they were already looking at the issue on their end even though we have not been able to make a report yet, or making a change to another issue that somehow fixed this one as a happy accident. With that in mind it may indeed be working, but if you spot this issue again please let us know.

    Thanks for rocking WordPress.com! :)

    @staff-totoro
Sorry can I understand, how are you rebuilding/replicating my site on your end?
Is it with just blocks? ~
Can you actually go to the link of my website? (i’m happy to provide if needed)

As mentioned, this has happened randomly multiple times.
One day it works, the other day “block recovery”.

I’d like an answer/fix so it doesnt keep happening.
Sshould I wait for your developers to see why?
It’s as if the block HTML is auto editing/changing when I check…

We replicated your layout on a private test site, but thank you!

I’ve been testing further and I think it’s related to your custom font choice so far. I do not know if the custom font choice is interacting with anything else, and we do need to check this further, but I do strongly suspect it’s due to that. You can give it a go too, if you’d like. Try setting your introduction and image captions back to the ‘default’ font and save – after doing this, do you find the errors return?

  • I can make an alternative suggestion while we work on this – instead of applying the Nunito font to each of your Paragraph blocks, apply it instead to the Typography settings of your Columns blocks! This should hopefully avoid the same errors coming back.

  • Unknown's avatar

With all due respect, I shouldn’t have to revert back to default font to see if errors return.
Even now when I’ve had Nunito font applied to Home page text, it works one day, then randomly doesnt another day I open up the edit page.

So FYI, I forgot to change the Home Page font to ‘Overpass’ Font instead.
That’s what I’ve now gone for on the individual ‘projects’ page (just forgot to apply to Home).

Odd that custom font causes said issues…but will await your findings with great interest.

In my ‘Homepage’ Paragraph blocks (for each text shown), the font is changed under the Typography section of the block anyway?.
When you say “apply the font to instead to Typography in Column block“, is this Typography any different to the Paragraph block Typography?

  • Hi there,

With all due respect, I shouldn’t have to revert back to default font to see if errors return.

I think it may help if I explain here that we’ve had trouble understanding what is causing the error you’ve been seeing. This means we can see the error you are experiencing but had some trouble figuring out why it wasn’t happening for us.

My colleague was asking if you’d be willing to test what they discovered, and confirm what you’ve seen, in the hopes we could pass that info along in our report. They were not asking you to make a permanent change to how you work with your site. Sorry if there was any confusion.

Odd that custom font causes said issues…but will await your findings with great interest.

Yes it is odd, and so specific that it took us a while to spot that the font was the issue. Now that we understand what is causing it, our developers will need some time to discover how to fix it, and that can be difficult for us to predict. We don’t have a specific timeline at this point.

In the meantime (until it is addressed by the developers) we may suggest workarounds you can use so that you can keep working on your site without having to wait for a fix.

When you say “apply the font to instead to Typography in Column block“, is this Typography any different to the Paragraph block Typography?

We have observed that if you set the fonts for columns a bit differently than you are used to, it will enable you to work on them without seeing the error messages. Since this is not familiar to you, I recorded a short video of how to do it. You can see how it’s done at the video at this link.

Essentially you will want to set the paragraph font to “default” then locate the column block that is holding that text (one level up when looking at the list view) and set the font there instead. This is a novel approach, but you can see in the video if I reload the editor, the block I apply this change to no longer shows the error message.

Please try that and it should alleviate the issue that you are seeing, and we will update you here as soon as we have more info on the underlying bug.

    Thanks for your patience!

–Apologies if it sounded like I was disregarding your information.
It just sounds like you think I’m constantly seeing these errors even now, and want me to change x,y,z settings/methods for a ‘workaround fix’.
Whereas I’m not seeing them now, or have been last few days. It just randomly appears sometimes.
ATM on my HomePage I’m seeing working blocks, with ‘Overpass’ font in my Paragraph section!
However you say you are seeing these issues with this setup.
    Hence the confusion.

–And thank you so much for taking time out to record a video for me.
This explains the workaround which I can use, and shows me that both ‘Paragraph‘ and ‘Column‘ have it’s own ‘Typography section (as I had initially asked)!

Is there any harm/disadvantage to changing font via column vs paragraph?
    Do most people do this?
Is paragraph the main way normally?

–Of course if it does happen again (which it has in the past), I will use your ‘Column Font’ method.
It just also doesn’t make sense why, in my most previous image attached, even the Header + Footer had disappeared.

Anyway, lets see how this is for the time being…and good luck on your bug fixes.
Any more issues I’ll report back if I’m at a deadend!

    Thank you :)

  • Thanks for that! It really shouldn’t matter whether you change the font in a paragraph or a column, unless you want a column to have paragraphs with multiple fonts I suppose. In your case it shouldn’t matter though.

Also, to be clear this is just a workaround if you are seeing that error consistently. Glad to hear you’re not.

We’ve filed a bug report in the meantime. If you see this come up again and this workaround does not help, please let us know!

    Hi @supernovia

Issue has arisen again with attempt block recovery.

On my projects page I edit, if I go back a few steps (quickly), it shows the message.
Now this is not a huge issue as I can just close/revert the issue, and I wont be manipulating/changing my website for now, but it is still occuring.

Do you have a progress update on the Overpass font fix?

    Thanks
