Why does Flickr image URL not give me image?

  • Unknown's avatar

I use the Add Media from URL command, but when I preview the post, only the URL shows up, not the image. Why?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Did you copy the entire URL including the “http://”? It might be that the “http://” appears twice as it already appears in the text box where you must insert the URL when adding the image. If you’re unsure, paste the URL here as it appears on the preview.

Thanks for the response. Yes, I posted the entire URL:

    https://www.flickr.com/gp/82832242@N06/Ph9Tp8

  • Okay, the URL you used is for the page on which the image appears, not the image itself. To get the image URL you must click the sharing icon (square with a diagonal arrow pointing out of it that appears in the sidebar) and copy the link you get there. But I see in this photo’s case sharing is restricted and it does not provide that link.

Are you the owner of the photo? If that’s the case it might be easier to just resize it to the size you want and then add it via your media library. If you want to insert it via flickr you’ll have to change the sharing settings over there.

Howdy– I changed the share settings, so I get a link, but the link still goes to the page, not just the photo:

    https://www.flickr.com/gp/82832242@N06/5w30wF

and does not appear on the post Preview.

I could just upload it to my WP media library, but I figure if I do this all the time, I’ll end up running out of free space. So I’d like to be able to link to Flickr, which gives me 1TB free.

  • I quickly checked and when I try to capture a link it still says sharing is restricted: http://snag.gy/zxbVI.jpg I don’t know flickr that well, so I don’t know how you can fix it that end. Best is to go to their support forum/help pages for an answer.

As far as the media library goes, you start with 3gig free. If you optimise your images for the web it will take quite a while for that to fill up. With optimise I mean don’t upload full resolution images to the library, but resize them in a photo editor prior to upload. Check your theme’s support page for the maximum width of the text column/images. If you image width (in pixels) is more than that it’s a waste, so resize your images to just the right size for your blog. That way you’ll save a lot of space.

You are not allowed to embed that image, that’s why it isn’t working (and it is not giving you the image URL). Either change the sharing settings or yes, upload it. Never upload a full high resolution image: just upload it at 72dpi.

OK, I did some more testing, and found out that you have to make the image ‘Public’. Then the link works!

Thanks for taking the time to help. I appreciate it.

  • Glad you could get it working. Remember if you ever upload images to your library to resize them first. It would in fact be good practice on flickr as well. Happy blogging :)
