Why does Google Alerts shorten my blog post title to one word?

  • Unknown's avatar

When my blog posts show up in a Google Alerts result, the title is often shortened to one word.

For example, yesterday I posted a blog post with the title, “Creative researcher merges ASMR with Opera.”

Today it is shown in my Google Alerts results with the title, “Opera.”

Many of the other results in my Google Alerts are full titles longer than mine, so it does not seem to be that my blog post title is too long.

    Any ideas?

We have no control of Google alerts or search results results display.

    Thanks for the reply timethief.

I am wondering the following though:
    1) is this happening to anyone else?
    2) if anyone has figured out why this happens to my (wordpress.com) blog posts but not to other blog posts in the Google alerts results
    3) if anyone has figured out a way to insure the full title of their blog post shows up in the google alerts results.

Thank you to any input or insight anyone might have.

Thank you for the links timethief but they are for “creating and managing Google Alerts”, my question is about when my blog post shows up in a Google Alert.

Let me explain: I created a Google Alert for the term “ASMR.” Google will then send me a daily email with the top news from the past 24 hours posted on the internet related to my term “ASMR.”

When I publish a blog post about ASMR, my blog post usually shows up in the Google Alert results, but the title of blog post in the results is usually shortened to one word although this is not true for the other results I am receiving in the Google Alert.

Hope this clarifies my issue which is either specific to my website and/or specific to wordpress.com – I won’t know until others share their experiences.

I understood you from the outset and I have no advice to give other than the fact that we do not provide support for this.

When we need Staff help with issues Volunteers cannot resolve like this one we type modlook into the sidebar tags on our forum threads. How do I get a Moderator/Staff reply for my question? https://en.support.wordpress.com/getting-help-in-the-forums/#how-do-i-get-a-moderatorstaff-reply-for-my-question Then we subscribe to this thread so we are notified when they respond. To subscribe look in the sidebar of this thread, find the subscribe to topics link and click it.

My request is not just for “support” but for understanding if this is happening to others whom also use wordpress.com.

Perhaps someone else will see this post and reply with, “that does not happen with my blog post titles” which would be very helpful to me because it might be something I am doing wrong on my website.

Or someone might reply with, “that used to happen to me but I figured out something I could do when posting my blog post so that it did not keep happening”.

How wordpress blog posts appear in Google Alerts seems like a pretty important topic and so I thought someone might have some insight.

Looks like you added “modlook” for me, thank you timethief.

    @asmruniversity:

As timethief mentioned, we can’t support how Google Alerts works. However I can say that I haven’t seen any reports of this particular issue.

If I understand you correctly, the actual functionality of Alerts isn’t at issue?

Chris, thank you for assisting me.

I think that Google Alerts and WordPress.com are both part of the problem but yet neither is to blame – it is just an unfortunate outcome of however they are interacting with each other.

My blog post title is often shortened to one word when it is featured in the results of a Google Alert, but most of the other results in the Google Alert are full sentences.

So my first curiosity is: what is happening to the blog post titles of other wordpress.com users when their blog posts show up in the results of a Google Alert?
