WHy does import from typepad not work?
-
Why does import finish successfully even though no posts were imported?
I have imported one blog successfully. When I try to import another or the same it completes with an email stating success, but no posts have been imported. I have tried many times, restarting computer and tried two different browsers.
Any idea what is needed/missing?

I’m sorry this is happening. We Volunteers can’t help with import issues so I have flagged this thread for Staff attention. Please be patient while waiting.

It doesn’t look like an import was every started.
Where are you getting your Typepad export file from?
-
I am having the same problem. I have tried several times to import my typepad blog into wordpress, it does the first step to select the file, then shifts to the ‘Assign Authors’ page, I click to proceed, it appears to do something and then ends with a blank screen (with WordPress header and side columns in place) . When I look none of my posts have transferred. None of the help files give me an answer on how to rectify this issue.
I created my typepad file by using the export function within typepad. I am not an xml expert but it appears to contain all of my posts with metatags. I can send you the text file if you want a closer look.

As an add on I do receive an email advising me that my import has been successful. But it isn’t…
-
Right. Earlier yesterday I got the message about it having been upload and to expect an email. Later on it changed to just cycle back to selecting the file from the select author page.
Email arrives after every attempt, but nothing appears to have been imported.
Not even import the stuff that worked to import earlier on can be imported. No error message of any kind.
The two blogs I’ve tried to import are oradbdev.mathiasmagnusson.com and photo.mathiasmagnusson.com. The one that worked yesterday morning but not later on is blog.mathiasmagnusson.com.
As what worked no longer does, I assume the problem is on the wordpress side so I have not attempted to export again from typepad or manually fix the problem in the files. For any of those I’d need to know of some problem to resolve before importing.
-
Are you able to open the export file in a text editor? If so, does it have a good deal of content in it, or is it mostly blank?
-
I have uploaded all three files to my media library for the mathiasmagblog.wordpress.com where photo.mathiasmagnusson.com.export is the file that was successfully imported to that blog.
That same file has not worked to import into any other of the blogs I’ve created.
The files are uploaded as pdf, but they are of course plain text-files os just rename the suffix.
Can you get them from the library or do I need to create a page and attach them to it for you to be able to see the files and the contents?

Correction
photo.mathiasmagnusson.com.export
should have been
blog.mathiasmagnusson.com.exportphoto.mathiasmagnusson.com.export is meant to be imported to mathiasph and
oradbdev.mathiasmagnusson.com.export is meant to be imported to oradbdev.Mathias

My typepad export file has a lot of content in it, and appears to contain all of my blog posts.
-
mathiasmag, the file format seems to have been altered beyond the extension change, possibly by the upload. If I send you an email, would you mind replying with the export file attached?
pretraveller, likewise, if I send you an email, would you mind replying with the export file attached?

Yes, that is OK. I’ll send you the really small file that did import OK before but now does not import at all.
Should we not get some sort of log-file or error when an import fails? It manages to parse out the author of the blogs, but then cannot import them.

When comparing a download from my library with the file I uploaded they are identical byte for byte and of the same exact length. What kind of structural problem do you see?
-
I have sent you both an email to the address on your accounts. Please reply to it as soon as you can.

The problem is solved. When I exported my Typepad blog I saved it as a .txt file (me not being an IT whip). When I changed the file name so it had an extension of .xml the file import into WordPress.com was successful
Thanks to the support team for resolving this issue!!

Thank you pretraveller for posting that. I’m paid to be an IT-Whiz, but knowing that the file has to be named .xml was not possible. In fact, the download on a mac from typepad defaults the file to .txt so everyone on a mac would have to rename the file to make it work.
macmanx, the structure problem you saw in the files what were they? If they may have caused an issue with the imported data, I’d like to know what to look for before I work too much on this and definitely before I publish the blog on it’s domain.
