Why does it say my domain is taken if I own it elsewhere?
-
I own a domain but when I try to register it on wordpress I get the error that the domain is already mapped to wordpress.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)
-
because a custom domain name can only be registered with one Registrar – you can domain map your name to your blog here $ 13.- / year
http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-existing-domain/
-
I get the same error:
Sorry but yogawareness.com is already mapped to a WordPress.com blog.
-
did you map it to another account or recently map it?
I can’t see the info on the base blog for the domain mapping – I have flagged this for staff attention – but they are quite backed up with requests today – so please be patient
-
The domain in question is already mapped to a WordPress.com site that is owned by a different user.
If I’ve misunderstood the issue, or if you have any other questions, please let me know.
-
Right – but how? If I own the domain how are they able to map it to your site? I wanted to use WordPress as the platform for my site, but are you saying that I can’t do that with the domain I purchased?
-
@pmciano – is it possible to contact the domain mapping owner and ask them what they plan on doing with the mapping & do that within the privacy standards?
Since upgrades are yearly – I would guess the domain mapping might be expired and in the sort of gray area – not renewed but still working – domain mapping without the matching domain is sort of worthless – or if the mapping has expired to remove it from the base blog?
-
https://yogawareness.wordpress.com/
Was created 7/8/2011.
yogawareness.com is currently parked as I haven’t started working on it yet.
So even if they once had it mapped shouldn’t it have expired long enough ago that it was dropped?
-
depends on when the mapping was done – some people register a name & do the mapping but never put a site together – also – because of how domain mapping was done that may or may not be the blog the name was mapped to
the staff are the only ones that can see the history at this point – sometimes domain mapping hangs onto a blog long after the mapping has expired – I have seen that “feature” give real problems in the past
you could try leaving a comment on the blog and asking them if it was their mapping
-
Okay, thanks!
Does this issue show up on WordPress.org in the same way? I was on the fence about self-hosting – but this issue seems to be standing in the way.
-
You be welcome
the mapping issue does not happen with .ORG – but there are other issues that I will skip over at this time
Wait until @pmciano responds – I have seen the staff clear old domain mapping from blogs many times – the catch is if the domain mapping has expired or not – if it has expired then should be easy to deal with by clearing the expired mapping – but I am not staff, so you need to wait for them
-
@auxclass Thank you for the assistance :-)
The Upgrade has not yet expired, but I will reach out to the user to confirm that I can remove it.
As soon as I have an update, I will let you know.

Glad to be able to help a bit
Yes your domain name can be used on a WordPress.ORG install with your own paid hosting.
give @pmciano a day or so to see if the owner of the domain mapping responds – save you some money & hassle if they will let the domain mapping be canceled

I have not heard back from the user and the Upgrade does not expire for another 2 weeks.
If that is too long to wait, @auxclass’s advice might be best.
If you have any more questions, please let us know.
