Why does my domain name include the word "dot" instead of a period?

  • Unknown's avatar

My domain name should have a “.” but instead it has the word “dot” Why is that ? I prefer the period, not the word “dot”

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

It seems that when you set up your site, you inadvertently typed “dot” where you meant there to be a period. Here’s what you can do about it.

If you’d like your site to be completely free you can change your url. “rootingaround.wordpress.com” is already taken, but if you think of something else you like just follow these instructions to change your URL: http://en.support.wordpress.com/changing-blog-address/

Note: to have a free account you can’t include a “.” in the part of the name you choose. You can only use lowercase letters and numbers.

If you’d rather have your url be “rootingaround.net” assuming it’s available, you can purchase that domain and map it to your existing account by following the instructions here: http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/register-domain/

Hope that helps! If you still have questions, or if part of my explanation was confusing, please let me know.

Thank you. I really doubt that I typed out the word “dot” but I appreciate your instructions and will give them a try.

    Thank you.

When people enter a custom domain URl they get the fact that they have to have an underlying .wordpress.com blog to may from to the custom domain URL. The software then provides the .wordpress.com “dot” address.

edit: URL they don’t get the fact

In addition if they try to register a .wordpress.com URL that’s already registered the software then provides the the .wordpress.com “dot” address because they cannot register a URL that already exists.

Lastly, there cannot be any punctuation inserted into the .wordpress.com URL.They can use only letters and numbers.

    Important Notes Before Upgrading http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/#important-notes-before-upgrading
    All About Domains http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/all-about-domains/

In order to map to a domain one must have an underlying .wordpress.com subdomain blog to map from, and the domain name you desire must be available for purchase, or you must already own the domain URL.

You must be logged in as Admin http://en.support.wordpress.com/user-roles/#administrator under the exact same username account that registered the blog to access the blog’s dashboard at > Store > My Upgrades to purchase a domain name by purchasing an annually renewable domain mapping upgrade for the blog. See here if you do not own a domain http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/

After you do the primary blog set up it can take between 24 – 72 hours for domain name propagation to take place throughout the internet. You can view the DNS changes here > http://www.whatsmydns.net/ What’s important during that stage is to be patient.

I apologize for sounding like a parrot. I’m having a bad vision day and struggling with blurry focus.

    Hello,

I am not sure Iundersatnd everything you wrote. But… I WAS logged in. I checked MANY domain names before I choose that one. I choose .net because .com was taken. I selected the upgrade option to pay $18 more each year to NOT have the .wordpressblog.com stuff appear on my URL.

And still, my domain name was all messed up. The word “dot” instead of period ! The inclusion of the .wordpressblog.com stuff at the end.

    I don’t get it.

    Hi Cindy,
WordPress.com is the top level domain here. All blogs hosted by WordPress.com are on .wordpress.com sub-domains.

What the underlying .wordpress.com blog URL is, is irrelevant, when you are domain mapping. What is relevant is that there must be an underlying .wordpress.com blog URL to map from to any domain URL. Is that understood?

  • Unknown's avatar

As tt said, there has to be an underlying WordPress.com URL/site before you can have a custom domain name here.

Once you register and map your custom domain, you will see the underlying WPcom URL in your admin area. Your visitors will see the custom domain. Media files however, will show the WPcom URL in their address.

Having ” rootingarounddotnet”.wordpress.com is a “feature” that sometimes happens with the way the software works – assuming that ” rootingaround.net” is available (or registered by you) – you can register it and map it to a blog here which replaces the original blog name when people visit your site (about $ 18 / year I think)

http://rootingaround.wordpress.com/ – is taken so you can’t have that name –

If you really don’t like rootingarounddotnet.wordpress.com – just register a different name –
