Why does my gallery not display properly on the front page of my blog?

  • Unknown's avatar

    I have created a gallery: https://reingeklickt.wordpress.com/2014/10/02/impressionen-4/
    – which looks finde when you go directly to THIS link, but doesn’t load all the images here: https://reingeklickt.wordpress.com/
There is nothing in the post but the code for the gallery. I have tried different settings with the same result. I have checked it with my phone and it looks the same, so it’s not a cache problem. I would appreciate any advice!

I’ve tagged this for Staff assistance.

At first the images in that Gallery post format post did not load for me at all, then they did, and then they are gone again or images doubled up.

    Both Chrome and FireFox latest.

I am speaking of the front page display, not the single post view.

Thanks, I’m using edge or Firefox on android and in both cases only one image loads and doubles up, the rest is just blank spaces.

OK then, we wait for Staff to help here.

  • Hi @ungemaeuer, we’ve found the issue — the images are loading at full resolution, which is causing timeouts and other odd behavior because your files are so large (8MB-9MB). I’ve filed a bug report, so it’ll be resolved fairly soon, but if you’d like a workaround in the meantime, try re-uploading the images in smaller sizes. You won’t need anything bigger than what displays on the individual post gallery.

    I hope that helps!

Additionally and not-so-Off-Topic/ If you are uploading and inserting such huge images (fenster 14.1MB and felix5 9.7MB) you will find that your free 3GB of storage will fill up in a flash.

To make the best use of your free storage space and maintain image clarity, you really need to resize and optimize your images in an image editing program prior to uploading them. For web viewing your images don’t really need to be any larger than a maximum of 1600 pixels on the long side. Baskerville’s theme Showcase page mentions 1400 pixels wide. Have a look at the Quick Specs here: https://theme.wordpress.com/themes/baskerville/

This will also improve loading time of your site, which is a very hot topic for search engine results right now. Personally, your Gallery post loaded for me very quickly, even with the above heavy images, and I don’t have a hugely fast connection.

Let us know if have any further questions.

  • We usually try to resize images for you too, so that can help.

Just as an update, while the larger images could be a problem, we found that the main issue here is that these images are not attached to this post. Our developers are working on a workaround, but if you’d like, here’s what I’d recommend:

    – Resize the images as @justjennifer recommended
    – Re-upload them to this post
    – Create a gallery of the freshly uploaded images

That should resolve this for you!
