  Were you trying to add a custom header image or add a photo as content inside a blog post?

  If you want to add a custom header image, you should be able to do that from the Appearance → Header page and you need to make sure the image is large enough to work. Look at the size requirements just above the uploader.

  When you upload photos into your media library, they won’t show up anywhere until you embed them into a post or page. You can edit the post you created to add an image. Here is a related page to help you: http://en.support.wordpress.com/images/#from-media-library
