why does my site not look like the theme i chose?

  • Unknown's avatar

i am just setting up my site/blog, but the theme page i have chosen “oxygen” which is free has a static homepage that looks much better than what i am able to realise. is this because i have to upgrade to a CSS package to make it look like this, as i cannot find the special options they show anywhere….
this is very frustrating…thanks for any help and guidance…
(and if this is true, will this be the same for any purchased theme? i want to post, not muck around in CSS)

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

You don’t need to upgrade to custom CSS to make the slider work on Oxygen but you need to follow the instructions. It looks a bit complicated but you’ll get it : http://theme.wordpress.com/themes/oxygen/

“The Showcase Page template offers a featured slider for up to six Sticky Posts. To use the template, create or edit a page, and assign it to the Showcase Page template from the Page Attributes module. If you’d like use the Showcase Page template on your front page, go to Settings → Reading and set the Front page option to Static Page. Select the page you just assigned the Showcase Page template to as your front page and then choose another page to serve as your blog page.”

thanks….i think i followed that already…but the image i have only appears in the middle column.
on the right – the third column – there are other widgets that are not displayed when i go to the widget settings.

so when i look at the oxygen theme the home page has a picture that spreads out across teh two columns, but i do not seem to be able to replicate that.
also their “categories” widget on teh left has reversed out text, which i also cannot seem to replicate.
    so i am stuck!
sorry, but your help did not help me….. help….!

Howdy! Custom Design is never required to get the demo site’s look for a free theme like Oxygen.

This may help you get started:

    1) Create a new Page
    2) Set the Template to Showcase Page (under Page Attributes) and Publish it
    3) Set the page you created in step 1 as a static front page under Settings -> Reading

From there, you can configure the slider & recent posts areas by adding some Featured Images to your posts. Ensure they meet the minimum dimensions listed on Oxygen’s theme showcase page: http://theme.wordpress.com/themes/oxygen/

You can also add widgets to the showcase page template by going to Appearance -> Widgets.

    I hope this helps!

Hey hey ! I’m helping everybody, regardless of their diet !
This theme is a bit tricky. I guess you’ve created the showcase page. But don’t put anything in it. Your slides will come from posts where you assign feature images :

    Featured Images

“To get the most of this theme, setting Featured Images is important.

Post thumbnails are 470 pixels wide, unless you make the post Sticky to show off in the featured slider, in which case they’re 750 pixels wide. Keep in mind: if you mark a post as Sticky but the featured image is less than 750 pixels wide, then it won’t display in the slider and will still disappear from the river of posts.”

As for the left category “widget”, it’s in fact a menu (appearance/menu).

Read the theme doc carefully, you should be all set.
