Why does my Upcoming Events widget add random spaces within the event text?
-
My Upcoming Events sidebar widget is working but it adds random blank spaces within the event text. Thus a word such as “and” is displayed as “a nd” and “features” becomes “featur es”. Quite annoying. I am using the Coraline Theme, Google Calendar and the website is for the Malaspina Naturalists Club at http://www.malanat.ca
I have tried deleting and re-creating the event, using shorter words, setting up a new Google Calendar. Nothing seems to help.
The problem is not confined to this blog, as the identical problem occurs at my test blog at http://www.aabryant.wordpress.com
Thank you in advance! The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hey Andrew,
Currently, the text appears to be reading fine on my end. For example, the description for an “Upcoming Speaker” reads as follows:
May 15, 2014 at 19:00 – 21:00
Barbara will discuss environmental issues related to the mining industry. She will talk about the causes of acidic drainage and arsenic, using examples from gold and base metal mines. The other widget areas seem to be working correctly as well. Is this issue still occurring on your side?
-
Thanks for looking Jeremy. Yes, it is still occurring, as it has been since day one. You will see “Featur es” under the upcoming “twigs and more” field trip, “T hese” and “w here” under the upcoming “Texada tidepools” trip, “a ge” under the “Bark, cones and the trees they grow upon” event, “c amera” under the “banding purple martins part III” event, and “o f” under the “Christmas Bird Count for Kids” event.
When a front page event is repeated on another static page, the errors are repeated exactly. I just edited the Google Calendar event for “Banding Purple Martins Part III” by changing the existing “Join us…and bring your camera.” to “Join us. And don’t forget your camera!” Let’s give it an hour or two and see what happens to the existing “c amera” mistake.
-
Hey Andrew,
I’m still looking into this. It looks like the bit you changed now reads “Join us. And don’t forget your camera!”. Is that what you’re seeing on your side?
-
Yes. By changing the sentence slightly in the Calendar, it resolved the problem for that single sentence and the original “c amera” mis-spelling. Put it’s a painfully tedious way to do it…for every event…then wait…see if it helped…or made it worse…and try again.

Hey Andrew,
I was able to reproduce this error when using your event descriptions in a test calendar. I’m currently trying to track down the issue and solution. I’ll get back to you as soon as possible!
-
Hey Andrew,
Can you let me know a bit about how you’re entering the calendar details? Are you entering them right into the Google Calendar interface or through a third-party app like Apple’s default Calendar app?
-
There are 4 people who have editing access to the Google Calendar (our club Website Committee) but I do 95% of it. I generally go straight to Google Calendar and login using the Club’s gmail account, which is (email visible only to moderators and staff)
As far as I know there is no other way to edit the 3 calendars (Invited Speakers, Field-trips, and Events) that provide the iCal feeds to the website. -
Hey Andrew,
I’m able to reproduce this when I import using your iCal feeds from your site. However, when I create a new calendar and embed that into my site, I can’t recreate the issue, which is leaving me a bit stumped. That’s why I’m trying to discern if there’s anything you’re doing differently when editing your calendar.
I’m still investigating!
-
It has me stumped as well. It began on day one, when I first began experimenting with “Andrew Bryant’s test blog” (aabryant.wordpress.com) and a calendar created with my personal gmail account. The problem persisted when I re-created the calendars from scratch using the Malaspina Naturalist gmail address. Again using only the Google Calendar interface…very strange indeed.
-
Hey Andrew,
I was finally able to recreate the issue on a test calendar. I’m going to pass the issue along to some of our developers for a second look. I’ll let you know as soon as I find out more info!
-
Hey Andrew,
I just wanted to let you know that our developers are aware of the issue. I’ll update you when a fix is in place!
-
Thanks for keeping me informed Jeremy. What did you need to do in order to re-create the issue in your test calendar? Anything special? Or is it truly just a “strange glitch” in the WordPress widget?
-
Hey Andrew,
I didn’t do anything special. It really is just a strange glitch. I’m not sure if it has anything to do with event detail length. When I create a shorter event detail, it seems to happen less frequently. In order to recreate it, I just typed 4-5 sentences in a row. Honestly, I’m not sure where the error lies. I’ll keep you posted as we figure out a solution!
