Why does namecheap have an earlier expiration than wordpress?

  I have a site, cerritotheater.org, that has an upgrade to the Premium plan. The upgrade is scheduled to expire on April 13. I have it on auto-renew.

  I just received an e-mail from namecheap.com telling me that the domain cerritotheater.org will expire on March 22. I was under the impression that the renewal of the domain would take place as part of the renewal of the Premium upgrade. If that’s the case, then why does the domain expire three weeks earlier than the upgrade?

  I want to be sure that everything gets renewed, but I don’t want to pay for anything twice. If I renew the Premium upgrade now, will that also renew my domain with namecheap.com? Or is the domain renewal with namecheap something separate from the Premium upgrade? If I renew the Premium upgrade now, will it be applied on the renewal date of April 13, or will I get a year’s service starting now (i.e. will I lose several weeks of service that I paid for last year because the terms overlap)?

  In order for a domain to be live on the web, it needs two things: a domain registration and a domain mapping.

  They could be from the same company, but it doesn’t have to be, which is the situation you are in. You registered the domain with Namecheap and the registration is set to expire on March 22nd, 2015.

  The domain mapping is with us as your site is hosted at WordPress.com. That is set to expire on May 18th, 2015. We renew all auto-renewals one month in advance of expiration in case there’s any problem with the upgrade (such as an expired card).

  If either your domain registration or mapping is expired your site would go down. I hope this clears things up a bit.
