Why does new field link and move with old field in contact form?

  • Unknown's avatar

When I create a contact form, after three new fields, the next links to an old field and I cannot move one without moving the other. Why? What am I doing wrong?

  • Hi there,

Do you have a link to the page/post in question? I’m happy to take a closer look.

I thought I could show you what happens, but if I create a form and insert it into a post, you can only see the resulting form. This problem occurs when I am creating the form.
Just now, I added a field for mailing address, which appeared by default below the delivered text box. I successfully moved the “mailing address” field to a location above the text box.
Then I added a field for “preferred language.” It appeared right below the mailing address field. I tried to move it up to a location under “name” but when I selected the “move” option on the “language” field, both the “language” field and the “mailing address” field moved together.
After I made that move, I selected the “move” option on the “mailing address” field, and both “mailing address” and “language” field moved together to the new location.
I can see this behavior in wp-admin when I try to add a form to a post.

  • Great, thanks for explaining. I am going to try and replicate this on my end best as I can, but if you could do me a favor, I would like you to do a few things for me to help.

    1. Can you try clearing out your browser’s cache and cookies, try a different browser, or a different computer if you can, and see if the problem persists? Instructions on clearing your cache here.
    2. If that doesn’t help, perhaps you can send me a screenshot of what is happening so I can see it on my end? Just add your screenshot to your Media Library of your site (Media>Add New) and let me know it is there so I can take a look. You can also take more than one screenshot, if it helps to show a couple of steps where things go wrong.
    3. If you don’t have the ability to take a screenshot, please try this tool. It will give you instructions on how to take a screenshot, as well as provide a link (to the image) you can paste into your response here

    Thanks for the additional info!

  • Quick follow-up question: Sounds like the problem occurs when you are dragging a form field from one location to another one. Correct?

Does this happen when you drag any element to a new location, or does it only affect certain elements, like the language one?

    Thanks!

I got in a big hurry yesterday, and I replied to the email that reported your request for information. That idea, of course, did not work. I’m sorry.
I tried clearing cache as you directed. No success in moving the second new field independently of the first new field.
I tried using Chrome as you directed. No success.
I added screen prints to my media library. You will see “new field added,” “new field moved,” “2nd new field added,” and “2nd new field moved.” In the final image, you will see that both field moved together rather than my chosen field, Language Preferred, moving by itself.
I am sorry I am so late in putting this up here where it belongs. I don’t know what possessed me to reply to the support email.

  • Yay! Forget the fact you got turned around… those screenshots were great, and walked me through your process well enough for me to duplicate this on my end.

Now that I see what you are talking about (the new form fields being attached at the hip) I am going to have our engineering team take a closer look here, and I will update you when I know more.

    Thanks!

Thank you very much. I’ll wait patiently. :)

  • Great! By the way, if you would like to create a form with all the elements you need, I can rearrange it for you manually if you tell me the order you want them in.

That way you can get your form up instead of waiting. :)

That is a wonderful offer. Fortunately for me, I uncharacteristically decided to test an idea before I was ready for it. I am trying to find ways to engage my readers more, and I was testing a concept. Since I have hit this snag, I am simply working on the posts that will need the forms in a couple of weeks. I will make each form unique to invite response to specific items in my posts. As soon a you tell me that the problem is solved, I will put a post up and build the form for it.
Thanks so very much for all your help and kindness. If I don’t get an answer by the time I do need one, about two weeks, then I will take you up on your offer.

  • Great, well if you don’t hear from me first, please let me know. :)
