Why does roman mapping not work?

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi

I have a blog named talkingbollocks.wordpress.com. This has a domain named talkingbollocks.net mapped to it. talkingbollocks.net is administered by fastnet. I have mapped domain and updated DNS records. This works fine. I am telling you this so you know I have been through this before.

    The problem
    ==========

I have a problem mapping a new domain/blog and I end up with an error pages saying ‘too many redirects’.

I and am trying to map the domain glenysnewton.co.uk
    To glenysnewt.wordpress.com

http://www.glenysnewton.co.uk was a live site which I was trying to replace so I can’t afford too much down time.

    glenysnewton.co.uk is administered by 123-reg.co.uk.

    What I did:
    =========

I mapped the domain in wordpress.com and paid the $13.
As instructed I replaced the existing 123-reg name servers with

    NS1.WORDPRESS.COM
    NS2.WORDPRESS.COM
    NS3.WORDPRESS.COM

However, then when I went to http://www.glenysnewton.co.uk or http://www.glenysnewt.com I got a message saying too many redirects.

What is more infuriating is that even if I revert the DNS records to the originals this make no difference. The wordpress blog is inaccessible and the original web site is inaccessible! I seem unable to suspend the mapping at the wordpress side to make the original site available again.

Oddly refreshing the failed page multiple times switches between glenysnewton.co.uk and glenysnewt.wordpress.com so the linkage is there in some form.

The only way I get get anything to work is to remove the DNS records and configure Web forwarding at 123-reg. This now forwards glenysnewton.co.uk to glenysnewt.wordpress.com. But the URL in the browser switches to the worpress one. If I make glenysnewton.co.uk the primary domain then the link breaks again with too many redirects.

    Please HELP!!!!

As a side issue I think it is odd that I can break any domain by mapping it in wordpress. So without any authority I could map cisco.com to my blog and break Cisco’s web site.
Also, it would be useful to have some way to suspend mapping.

    Regards

Domain!!!! Domaain!!! Why does Domain mapping not work not roman….bloody spell checker!!

    Hi!

The issue here is that the nameservers for the domain glenysnewton.co.uk are not pointed to WordPress.com as shown here:

    ;; QUESTION SECTION:
    ;glenysnewton.co.uk. IN	NS

    ;; ANSWER SECTION:
    glenysnewton.co.uk.	14400	IN	NS	ns2.123-reg.co.uk.
    glenysnewton.co.uk.	14400	IN	NS	ns.123-reg.co.uk.

Did you change them back to point to 123-reg? You’ll need to change them back to WordPress.com:

    NS1.WORDPRESS.COM
    NS2.WORDPRESS.COM
    NS3.WORDPRESS.COM

Can you let me know once you’ve done that?

As a side issue I think it is odd that I can break any domain by mapping it in wordpress. So without any authority I could map cisco.com to my blog and break Cisco’s web site.

This is incorrect – in order to break Cisco.com, you would need to have access to the nameservers for that domain. Just mapping it to your WordPress.com site wouldn’t really cause any trouble. It would just direct your WordPress.com site (glenysnewt.wordpress.com) to Cisco.com.

Also, it would be useful to have some way to suspend mapping.

In some ways, you can do that here:

    https://glenysnewt.wordpress.com/wp-admin/paid-upgrades.php?page=domains

For example, if you update the primary domain on your account to glenysnewt.wordpress.com, your site will load correctly at that domain (as it is now on my side). Can you try loading glenysnewt.wordpress.com?

    Thanks Jeremey,

Yes, I changed the DNS back as this seemed to make things work.
I understand what you say about cisco.com.

I wonder if my experience is just that I am not waiting long enough for changes to take effect. Then when I change something it complicates things.

Therefore can I just conform a few things about how it should work before I start messing it up again.

Is it true that just registering a domain with WordPress should not have any effect over the original domain? (the old site should continue to work).

Is it true that the domain will only divert to the wordpress site once the name servers have been added? And is it true that this is all that is required to divert traffic to wordpress? (So, in theory, this could be done without registering the domain with wordpress).

Is it true that setting the primary domain to the domain I registered (in this case glenysnewton.co.uk) has only one affect and that is to make the domain appear in the web browser?

And one last thing. My other blog (talkingbollocks.net) has the domain registered with wordpress and the Name servers registered. It also has web forwarding with masking configured at the domain registration site (fastnet).

So is it true that this web forwarding is NOT necessary? That the name server changes should redirect traffic without web forwarding?

    Thanks for you help.

I wonder if my experience is just that I am not waiting long enough for changes to take effect. Then when I change something it complicates things.

I suspect this might be the case. It can take up to 24 hours for your domain to start working correctly after you update the name servers.

Is it true that just registering a domain with WordPress should not have any effect over the original domain? (the old site should continue to work).

If I understand correctly, you’re asking about the following:

    1. You start a site (example.wordpress.com)

    2. Then, you register a domain (example.com)

Registering the domain will not affect the site content (except replacing the URL). Please let me know if I misunderstood!

Is it true that the domain will only divert to the wordpress site once the name servers have been added?

    Correct.

And is it true that this is all that is required to divert traffic to wordpress? (So, in theory, this could be done without registering the domain with wordpress).

In order for the domain to work properly, you’ll need to purchase the mapping upgrade. You can get it to work without the mapping upgrade, but this leads to several other issues. Instead of example.wordpress.com redirecting to example.com, each would load separately without the mapping upgrade causing quite a few issues including with your stats.

Is it true that setting the primary domain to the domain I registered (in this case glenysnewton.co.uk) has only one affect and that is to make the domain appear in the web browser?

The primary effect is that it will replace your glenysnewt.wordpress.com URL. However, it does a few other things like updating all of your post URLs to glenysnewton.co.uk addresses and helping Google index your site correctly.

    Correct!

    Thanks for this Jeremy.

Sorry I have been away so couldn’t work on this. I have it on hold for the moment I don’t want to interrupt service during a few critical days. After that I’lll do as you advised.

    Thanks for you help again.

    regards
