Why does the 403 forbidden message appear on WP ipad app?
-
When clicking on site links of blogs that have liked a post under my notifications window I receive a 403 forbidden nginx message on WP ipad app – this does not happen if I access my account through the log-in on Safari on the ipad or a regular desktop….

Hi there,
This message appears when the app is trying to connect to a WordPress.com blog through a self-hosted WordPress.org method. It usually happens when someone adds a blog to the app and they click the wrong button (selecting that they have a self-hosted blog when they should select that their blog is with WordPress.com), however in some rare cases, the app gets confused and thinks that you pressed that wrong button when in fact you pressed the correct one.
The only way to fix it is to remove your blog from the app, make sure the app is up-to-date, and then re-add your your blog to the app. When you do, of course make sure you select WordPress.com! That should fix the issue!

Well, that’s very interesting but until yesterday I had never had a problem with these issues on either the iPad or the iPhone (which gave me this same message today). I never had to “add” my blog to the app in the first place – when I originally downloaded it I automatically had access to my dashboard, etc… What do you mean “remove” my blog from the app? As far as updates go, I do them every day…

I have gone into the settings on the iPhone, removed the blog (which was configured as .com already), re-added it making sure it was .com not self-hosted, gone back into the notifications, clicked on anyone’s link in the comments and still get the 403 forbidden message. To add insult to injury, on both the iPhone and iPad the app frequently cuts out when I click on the blog name in the reader to access the full post or scroll down too quickly. I don’t know how many times I have sent crash reports detailing this issue but it is getting tiresome…

Hey there,
I’m a little concerned that we might be talking about different things at this point because your blog should not have been added to your app by default. You would have needed to add it.
When you first download the WordPress.com app from the App Store, you have to go in and tell the application which blog to connect to by clicking the “Add a Blog” button (this option is also available any time within the app’s Settings, not the iPhone’s or iPad’s settings). You can then select Add Self-Hosted Blog or Add WordPress.com Blog.
Is this the process which you’re following to add your blog to your app?

We are going off on a tangent that is not relevant to the original query that was made – please see my last response. My blog set-up on the iPad/iPhone app is perfectly fine – I’ve had it for as long as I have had the blog which is almost a year (with few problems) and have just recently begun to see cut-outs and the 403 forbidden message. I did go back into the app’s settings to check, just in case, and followed your instructions about removing and re-adding to see if that helped but to no avail. I am not talking about accessing my own blog, its dashboard or the reader – I am talking about accessing other people’s blog entries from the reader drop-downs or notifications windows as I have in the past. Here are the problems:
1. When scrolling down the reader too quickly the app cuts out completely and goes back to the iPhone/iPad home screen.
2. Depending on the day, tapping on a blog name at the top of a post in the reader will cause the app to cut out and return to the home screen OR
3. tapping on a blog name in the reader will take you to the 403 Forbidden message
4. tapping on a blog name that has left a comment in the Notifications window results in a 403 Forbidden message
5. tapping on a blog name beside its gravatar in the “these people have liked your post” drop-down results in a 403 Forbidden message.
Please let me know if I can provide any further info so that we may rectify this issue. Thanks in advance. -
This problem has been noted and a fix should have been included in this most recent version of the iPhone WordPress app or will be in the next one.
Thank you for bringing this to our attention.

I did an update this morning and the issue is still there so will wait for the next one and keep you apprised. In the meantime, a workaround through the email notifications lets me access others’ sites no problem…
