Why does the Blog Post Block work differently in Desktop, Tablet or mobile Preview?
-
I have been workiing on this blog for a few months and have not launched it. When I preview my blog post in the Blog Post Block I see a paragraph with a ‘Continue Reading’ on the desktop preview but not the tablet or mobile preview. btw I attended a webinar for blogging a few months ago and have used the Support site to pull up documentation. As I and others said on the webinar chat, WordPress is not intuitive and very complex. The instructors immediately jumped on that and encouraged us t o contact Support….so here I am. I love your title of Happiness Engineers.

Hello there,
Thank you for reaching out.
When I preview my blog post in the Blog Post Block I see a paragraph with a ‘Continue Reading’ on the desktop preview but not the tablet or mobile preview.
I see the difference you’re describing here. Can you tell us if there’s a preference you’re looking to use for your site?
When you mention the complexity, can you detail what you’re looking to do please? We can look to details some next steps to help.
Many thanks.

Hi, I thought at one point in my attempts that the post was shown completely. Not sure what I did to change that, can’t find a button in the Blog Posts Block settings. Second preference would be to have the “ Continue Reading” on desktop, mobile and tablet. I’m looking to get consistency on all three. Is it correct to put the Blog Posts block on the Home page? When I publish my second post will it go to the top of that block? Thx for your help!

Hi there,
I am seeing continue reading on both mobile and desktop:
For mobile, this is on a browser on an iPhone. Are you still unable to see this on your devices? If not, please let me know if you’re using a browser or app and what OS are you on for your mobile devices.

Yes, your posts will update as you add them, depending on the settings you place on the block. For more information on the Blog Posts Block, please check out:

When I am putting the blog together I am working on my laptop on the WordPress.com site. When I am in the edit page I click on the top right for Preview, select Desktop, Mobile, or Tablet and click on “Preview in new tab”. Yesterday, the Desktop preview showed “Continue reading” but not the Tablet or Mobile. Today after reading your response, it shows it in Tablet but not in Mobile. I have made no changes today. I also went to an email that I sent my daughter to review the site for me and opened it on my iphone 12 Pro on iOS 15.5 and it gives the “Continue reading”. Should it show in the Preview mode also? Thanks again so much. Glad I reached out to you.

Hi @wboyce333, good question on whether it shows in the preview mode.
Just so we’re on the same page, once you’ve published the posts and you’re viewing the site, do you see the continue reading option? Is it only missing when you’re in preview?
-
Oh interesting, I seem to see it after posting on laptop, mobile and tablet. Perhaps it is only in preview mode that I am not seeing it.
-
Hello there!
Glad to see it’s showing on all three devices – I’ve taken a look at the preview and I am indeed seeing that also.
To double check, are you seeing this via preview?
-
Yes, today I just checked again and in Preview for both Tablet and Mobile I do not see the “Continue reading”. I just see (…)
But also, I thouught once in my testing I thought I hit a switch and I saw the post come up as the entire page without a “Continue reading”. Is that possible?
Thank you!

I pulled up that page in the editor and I noticed that this setting was turned off:

If I toggle that on (while the Blog Posts Block is selected), then I see the “Keep reading” link on all preview types: Desktop, Tablet, and Mobile.
Can you try and toggle that on and see if that works now? Let us know!

You are mistaken about your own system. In the documentatioin about the Blog Posts Block (hopefully this link will work:
https://wordpress.com/support/wordpress-editor/blocks/blog-posts-block/It explains that the button you toggled has to do with the fact that although 1 to 100 posts can be displayed, any more than 15 will slow down performance. The toggle you put on puts a “Keep Reading” message on if you want the users/viewer to display older postings (assuming they are in reverse chronological order) after the 15. Mine are currently set at
“Number of Items” is 5.When I link from an email I sent myself with the link to the blog, I can now see the “Continue reading” comment after the summary of 55 characters. It is confusing because WordPress uses the phrases “Continue reading” and “Keep reading” in 2 different contexts. The “Continue reading” is in the context of the summary displayed of only 55 characters but the phrase is not shown in the Blog Post Block settings, it is automatic by WordPress, that I can see anyway.
I was only looking at the Preview and not seeing the “Continue reading” after the summary. But as another Happiness Engineer pointed out, they do show on the site when I link to it. So I think the Preview may have a problem.
Thanks.

“Number of Items” is 5.Hmm, to check this sounds like the Load more button: https://wordpress.com/support/wordpress-editor/blocks/blog-posts-block/#block-settings
The Read more block will limit the post content to the excerpt/

Yes, I can relate to this point raised here.
they do show on the site when I link to it. So I think the Preview may have a problem.
I’d perhaps suggest clearing the browser cache to see if that may clear anything in the preview that may be stored by the browser:
Many thanks.

I cleared the cache but the Preview still works the same. I’m okay now that I know that’s how it works.
Thanks for the help. I learned a lot.
