Why does the "improved" editor always trash source code?

  • Unknown's avatar

    Attempting to edit an existing post that contains sourcecode tags *instantly* trashes the code blocks by incorrectly HTML-quoting all the amperands and double-quote characters:

    printf(&_quot_; Hit i: %d &_quot_;,i);
    if (CleanTouch(&_amp_;pt)) {

    I added underscores to prevent *this* editor from un-quoting the erroneous values.

    The only way to prevent this is to close that tab before the new editor auto-saves, then edit the undamaged post with the old editor.

    I’ve reported this error in the “old” editor and that seems to happen much less often, but it’s absolutely dependable and repeatable with the new editor.

    My posts include plenty of source code , so this is a showstopper for the “improved” editor: HELP!

    Thanks…

    Hi Ed,

    My apologies for the troubles! Thank you for reporting this though.

    I checked into this error with a developer, and it’s a known issue we’ve been able to reproduce. It’s just that our developers have not yet determined the best fix for it.

    I’ve attached this forum thread to their issue tracking and we’ll alert you here when we have new information.

    This seems to be a problem of long standing with both editors, so how can I raise its priority? I’m certain that I’m not the only blogger posting source code snippets…

    While waiting, how do I completely disable the “new” editor and force the “old” editor to appear?

    For example, the Edit link on each individual post launches the new editor, but the title links on the Posts page doesn’t. As a result, previewing a post, then clicking the convenient Edit button shreds the source code.

    This is not, to put it mildly, an awesome experience.

    Along those lines, I trust that you will not remove the old editor until the new, improved editor is actually functional.

    Thanks…

    Also, until you get the new editor up to speed, can you please get rid of this at the top of the old editor:

    There’s now an easier way to create on WordPress.com! Switch to the improved posting experience.

    It just wastes some rather valuable screen space…

    Thanks…

    Hi Ed,

    By attaching this thread to our developers issue, that does raise the issue’s priority. You’re right that it is a long-standing issue, and I’m sorry that we don’t have an estimate on when the issue will be resolved.

    Along those lines, I trust that you will not remove the old editor until the new, improved editor is actually functional.

    We do not plan to remove the old editor at all. We have no plans to remove anything available in the /wp-admin/ dashboard.

    Also, until you get the new editor up to speed, can you please get rid of this at the top of the old editor:

    I will submit this as a request as well. Right now there is not a way to opt-out of that message.
