Why does the tweet button no longer use my Twitter username?
-
The tweet button no longer uses my Twitter username when sharing my posts. I have Publicize turned on with my Twitter account linked, but as of today it has begun reasserting the “via @wordpressdotcome” suffix. I’ve checked other WordPress.com blogs that I know have the same setup and found the same behavior.

Hey Michael,
We wanted to reach out to you over you concerns around publicize not correctly posting to twitter. We reviewed your twitter stream ( https://twitter.com/mjvito ) to see if we could find examples of this behaviour, however we’re unable to right now.
Could you please provide us an example of a tweet w/ the “via @wordpressdotcom” suffix? Also, we would greatly appreciate it if you could provide a link to a tweet that does not have this behaviour.
-
Hi, thanks for responding!
You won’t find that behavior in my own stream, because I don’t use Publicize to automatically send the item to Twitter, I do that manually after publishing and don’t include my handle. I only activated Publicize so that when people click the Tweet button to share my posts it would include my own Twitter handle instead of “via @wordpressdotcom”. It worked fine with this setup for a very long time, but changed at some point in the last week.
All you’d need to do is click the Tweet button on any of my posts to see the pre-formatted Tweet generated. Here for example: http://likeafishinwater.com/2013/04/04/shinjuku-station/ When I click the Tweet button I get “Shinjuku Station http://wp.me/pPtU4-1WB via @wordpressdotcom” instead of ending with “@mjvito”

Hey Michael,
Thanks for providing the additional context! With this, we can now tell you that we’ve changed the behaviour on this feature early last week (15th April). We default to the suffix of “via @wordpressdotcom”, unless we detect your twitter handle. In this case, we use that instead.
Please let me know if this answers you questions; and if you have any additional follow on questions?

Got it. So it seems the problem is that it doesn’t detect my Twitter handle. How do I fix that?
-
Hey Michael,
I just wanted to let you know that I am going to ask the developer to fix your older posts, so that the correct Twitter handle is pulled. I don’t have an estimated timeline for this, but will get back in touch whenever it’s done.
-
Thanks for looking into it. To be honest, I don’t think I’m a unique case. I have a friend with a WP blog that’s experiencing the same behavior. In addition, it’s still happening on new posts (created/posted after the April 15 change you mentioned), so not just affecting the old ones. I won’t extrapolate for everyone on the entire platform (which is overall, wonderful!) based on two users, but seems like there’s a bigger issue happening. Perhaps the April 15 change is causing a break in the Tweet button implementation?
Curious to hear what you find. And thanks again for the help.

Hey Michael,
It’s unfortunate that this is happening to newer posts also. Development are currently investigating, however if you could supply me your friends username also, I’ll pass this along to dev also so we can prioritize.
Cheers!

Her username is “christainnewyork”. The URL is christainnewyork.com, but it’s a WordPress.com hosted blog like mine. Her Tweet button used to pull her handle “@christanyc”, but now “@wordpressdotcom”
I looked through some Freshly Pressed blogs, found some that pulled the user’s Twitter handle, others not. Would seem the issue doesn’t affect everyone.
Good luck!

Hey Michael,
Awesome, thanks. Passed the feedback along to dev, and I’m just waiting on some feedback from them now. I’ll keep you in the loop!

Hey Michael,
I just wanted to let you know that we’re still looking into this issue!

Hey Michael,
My bad – I should have had more coffee before reading emails :)
It looks like dev are tracking this issue, but have not fixed it yet. Tentative estimation is potentially this week.
Sorry again for the false positive.

Hi Ruairi-
I checked 5-6 posts, but it’s still having the same problem. I’ll check my next new post on Sat, as well.
-
Hey Michael,
Ah, I see the problem – I forgot to tell you to re-link your twitter a/c to your WordPress install (ie: remove/re-add). Apologies.

Yay! Fixed! Thanks for sticking with this. Can I send you some kind of award? I can’t remember the last time I got such an attentive response from a web service.
