Why does WordPress ask for my phone number to change my account settings?

  I want to update my Account Options in Settings but I am unable to do so without giving you my phone number. This goes against your privacy policy:

  “We don’t ask you for personal information unless we truly need it.”

  You don’t need my phone number for me to change my username, email address, web address, or Interface Language. Please separate these into two forms as this appears to be a a deceptive way to get my contact information.
