Why does WordPress choose the LAST image when sharing with Facebook?

Why does WordPress select the last image to use when sending the post to Facebook?
Your FAQ page states “Uploaded images: If you haven’t assigned a Featured Image, we recommend images to Facebook that you have inserted into your post. They are recommended from top to bottom in your post.”

So, the first image is supposed to be chosen but it is always the final one, which is of course usually the most uninteresting one!

    Hi there!

We aren’t able to fully ‘select’ an image for a Facebook share if a Featured Image isn’t chosen. Facebook has ultimate control over which image gets selected. You can see how Facebook sees your links here:

Fair enough, but why then state “They are recommended from top to bottom…” ? I assume from your reply that you DO recommend the first one but then ultimately FB chooses whatever it wants.

I think what I may have to do in the future is post with just ONE image so that gets selected to go to FB, and then go in and edit the post by adding more images… Hopefully FB won’t later re-spider it and change the image to the last one again. Might work.

This is pretty accurate. We do try to make suggestions on our end of course, but if there’s no Featured Image we have less control over what Facebook ultimately chooses.

This would definitely work. Is there a reason you don’t want to set a Featured Image? Setting a Featured Image would allow you to select the correct image to share to Facebook and make it so you don’t need to go back and edit your post after you publish.

Let me know if I can help with anything else! :)

Thanks, Shawna. To be perfectly honest I never knew what the “featured image” was. I had assumed it was an image that one could choose that would represent (somehow) your Blog in general. If the featured image is something that can be set for each post – as you seem to be telling me – then I will have to explore that now.

Oh great! Sorry I didn’t give you more information about that! You can set an individual Featured Image for each post. Some themes take this image and display it prominently on your single post page, but some don’t, so experiment and see what happens!

    Here’s info on Featured Images:

    Featured Images

You set the Featured Image through the post editor. It’s usually the very bottom of the right side of the editor.

Let me know if I can help further! :)

Thanks, Shawna, I’ll give that a try.
