Why does WordPress need storage on my computer

I don’t understand this. ‘Do you want to allow “https://wordpress.com” to use up to 2.8 GB of storage on your Mac?’ Seems like quite a lot of space.

  • Hi there,

All websites use storage on your computer. When you open any website your browser downloads certain files and store them in the local cache on your harddrive so that next time you visit the same page, your browser can just access the files locally instead of having to download them from the server again.

Safari specifically (I don’t know of any other browser that does this) asks for your permission if that local storage exceeds a certain arbitrary limit, but it’s mostly safe to just give the permission.

That said, we’ve had several reports from people that Safari is requesting this very high storage for WordPress.com, and some of our staff have experienced it themselves. We’re investigating it, but it would help if you can provide some more information:

    • MacOS Version (or iOS if they’re mobile)
    • Safari Version
    • What did you do right before you got message (preferably the exact sequence of clicks)
