Why does WP rotate my images for me, making them incorrectly oriented?

  • Unknown's avatar

Recently WordPress has unrotated my images for me, and the Edit Image feature does not work in my usual browser (IE 8.0.6001.18702, the latest I can get for Windows XP SP3). I was able to get the image rotated in Firefox (12.0), but I was unable to completely remove an unrotated image — I had to go back to IE to finish the job.

Q1: Why does WP rotate my images for me? I pre-rotate them so that they are correctly vertical before I upload theml WP should not change them.

Q2: Bug report: the image editor does not work in IE8

Q3: Bug report: the post editor does not work properly in Firefox 12 (I could not fuly remove an incorrectly oriented image).

I have been wondering whe this issue with this new feature would surface. This thread has been flagged for Staff attention.

  • We recently started auto-rotating the images for you based on the camera’s orientation, so there’s no need to rotate them prior to upload: http://en.blog.wordpress.com/2012/05/30/a-little-boost-to-your-photos-and-galleries/

I’m not encountering the issue you state in Firefox 12. Would you please try again with all add-ons disabled?

I am using FF12.0. I am rotating my images using MS Office first as I have always done and then loading to WP. WP is then rotating them back to their original orientation. Annoying as hell and needs to be fixed.

I am having the exact same issue. I rotate pics to the proper alignment before uploading but when pullled up on WP they are sideways and the “Edit Image” function is essentially disabled. If I click anything on that window it resets to the original post window without adding the photo. I’ve also tried loading the photo to the post and going back in to rotate it but no luck there either. Certain images just can’t be loaded properly anymore and it is very frustrating.

I posted the original message. What I’m doing currently is this:
    – I still do most of my Post composition in IE8 (habit??)
    – if I have a portrait-orientation picture, already rotated in my usual offline prep, I upload it in FF12 (and WP rotates it for me — incorrectly, since that is NOT what I want to happen)
    – in FF12 I can un-rotate the picture successfully, so I do it there (Edit Image)
    – in IE8 the Edit Image function was still effectively disabled the last time I tried, but I’m essentially ignoring that and have not tried again recently

It would be nice to know when the picture editor non-functionality in IE8 gets fixed, so that I don’t have to dance back and forth between web browsers to create a new post. Thanks

Thanks for the FF12 tip. It solved my issues. I guess I’ll just do my photo-blogging from that browser. Maybe I should switch from IE altogether. Either way appreciate the tip.

I’m very unhappy with the auto-rotate now being done by WordPress – please fix/undo this ‘feature’.
