Why does WP site edit my images?

  • Unknown's avatar

Identical images, uploaded to same theme, two different sites. The self hosted site displays the images correctly, without artifacts around the edge, the WP site/theme does something to the image causing artifacts around the edges. Can you offer suggestions on how to correct?

The images are oval gifs, a design preference, and unusual, I know. PNG’s are twice the size even with significant optimization, so I’d rather use the gifs. But I can’t figure out why they’d display correctly on one and not the other

If you’d like, the self-hosted site http://artscott.com with http://artscottnet.wordpress.org for comparison.

Thank you for any suggestions you may have.

Images uploaded to WP get slightly compressed, so they lose some quality, and this becomes noticeable when the displayed version is scaled down. See this post of mine for an example:
    http://wpbtips.wordpress.com/2010/01/16/image-quality/
So, for no perceptible loss of quality, you should create images that aren’t wider than the maximum the theme can accommodate (700px in your case).

But I don’t see why you are reluctant to use PNGs. Your 3GB of free space are enough for many thousands of images. In my tests blog I have uploaded around 1100 images so far, and they’ve only taken up 8% of the available space.

Hi justpi, I appreciate your time in responding, thank you. I’ll try a few different sizes to see if that makes a difference, making sure they’re not over 700.

re png’s, it’s not so much disk space, as site performance; with high speed internet access common, this seems silly, I know, but there are still quite a few on slower connections or using remote proxies, etc, so just trying to keep it as efficient as a photo blog can be – I’m also mindful of wp’s generous bandwidth to serve the site. I’ll use the png’s if I can’t correct the issues with the gifs.

Thanks again for your helpful response, and your time.

    Cheers,
    Scott

quick update, justpi’s solution worked perfectly. Thank you again

    You’re welcome.
As for “efficient”, loading time depends on file size but it depends on number of images per page as well. So another thing you could is decrease the number of posts per page (in Settings > Reading, in case you’re not familiar with this option).
