Why doesn’t the break (<br />) tag work?

  First off, I’d like to say that I didn’t post this in the CSS section because it’s HTML, not CSS.

  Secondly, the article I need help with is here: http://prtat.wordpress.com/2009/06/30/prizerebel-releases-referral-guide/

  What I want is to be able to have extra spacing in between the two paragraphs and the block quote, but when trying to add breaks, they do nothing.

  First off you have to realize that HTML is a “standard.” Standard paragraph spacing is one blank line between paragraphs. Additional returns or breaks will be stripped out so as to stay within standards. There is however several tricks to add extra space between paragraphs and such as outlined in the following blog post.

  I’ve inserted
  into my first blog post ((email visible only to moderators and staff)) but the line break disappears when the blog appears on my Linked-In page. I also tried returns in the visual version. Nothing seems to hold. I am an inexperienced HTML/blog person.
