Why doesn't the multi file uploader work?

  • Unknown's avatar

The multi file uploader has worked great for me for two months, and suddenly it does not. I did not recently update any software at the time it stopped working. I have a Mac running Mountain Lion 10.8.3, and I am using Firefox v21.0, with Flash player 11.0. I have also tried Safari v. 6.0.4 and neither works. I have cleared my entire browser cache and cookies. Any other suggestions? My searches show that this is not an uncommon problem with WordPress, but I haven’t seen any satisfactory solutions.

Are you using the drag and drop method of uploading, or the regular multi-file uploader where you select the files from the file list box?

  • Unknown's avatar

Drag and drop method is my primary concern, though the file list method (the “select files” button under the text “Drop Files Here”) is glitchy as well. When I drag and drop nothing happens. Using the manual multi-file uploader, I often can’t access the folders within my iPhoto library. Without access to folders, it’s like hunting for a needle in a haystack. Sometimes it works fine though.

Make sure javascript is enabled. The drag and drop uses javascript, I believe, instead of Flash.

I use Safari 6.0.4 and FF 21.0 as well and when I tried in both, the drag and drop worked for me. I’m not sure what the issue may be with your computer.

Have you tried shutting your computer down completely and then restarting it (full shutdown instead of a restart)?

You might also try using a different computer, if you have access to one at your location. That would help determine if it is related to just that one computer.

I’ll tag this for staff attention also and perhaps they will have some suggestions and can check your site from their end.

If you are using a laptop, you could also try from an different service provider, such as from a wi-fi hot spot somewhere to see if it might somehow be related to your internet service.

I tried from my laptop at home (also a Mac, running the same systems) and drag and drop wouldn’t work there either. However, I just tried from my work PC in IE, and drag and drop worked. So it’s something to do with either my computers or network.

I did try disconnecting wifi and reconnecting, but that also had no effect.

I’ll check javascript settings when I get home, but I don’t know why those would have suddenly changed.

Has there been any update done to your wi-fi router or firewall at home?

  • Unknown's avatar

No, nothing changed between this week and last.

Have you tried the universal “WordPress fix it thing”?

@auxclass, thanks :) I did find that page and tried everything on it. No luck.

We need specifics. IE is vague. Safari is vague.

Please provide your step by step results in answer to this troubleshooting drill:

If you are not running one of the browsers and versions listed at http://browsehappy.com/ please try upgrading or switching first.

Note: If you are using an IE9 browser in compatibility mode that makes it render as IE7 and IE7 is not supported. To disable see > http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/1196-internet-explorer-compatibility-view-turn-off.html

If you are running one of the browsers and versions listed at http://browsehappy.com please do these four things:

    1. Try clearing your browser’s cache: http://www.google.com/support/accounts/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=32050

    2. (a) Make sure that you have third-party cookies enabled: http://en.support.wordpress.com/third-party-cookies/
    (b) Make sure that you have JavaScript enabled http://www.google.com/adsense/support/bin/answer.py?answer=12654

    3. Try with all browser extensions or add-ons temporarily disabled.

    4. Try enabling HTTPS: http://en.support.wordpress.com/https/

    5. Confirm your Flash is updated http://www.adobe.com/software/flash/about/ and if required installing the latest version of Flash http://www.adobe.com/products/flashplayer/

If it’s still happening, let us know exactly which browser (and version of it) you’re using by checking here if necessary http://www.whatbrowser.org/ and also post any error reports you get.

NOTE: I’ll tag this thread for Staff assistance. Please subscribe to the thread so you are notified when they respond.

@timethief, You’ll note that all of your questions were answered in my original post.

    Hi there,

I was unable to reproduce the issue in Firefox 21.

Can you let me know exactly where the process fails for you? Does the uploader not even recognize your media?

What kinds of files are you trying to upload? Images or something else? What are the file types, and how large are the images? Are you able to use the browser uploader option instead?

It sounds like it could be your connection, or a computer setting, but I’d like to see if we can narrow it down for you. If you can take a screenshot of any errors or other issues, that would be great (I’m not sure if there’s anything visible on your end but if so that can be helpful). You can either upload a screenshot to your media library, or assuming the browser uploader also fails, to a third-party image sharing service.

    @gwenakinyi
I’m so sorry for overlooking the first post. I humbly apologize.

Are you running any private browser settings?
    Are you running any AdBlockers?
Have you tried disabling all browser addons and extensions?
Have you have a recent security program update?

See here for advanced troubleshooting >

@jackiedana, to answer your questions: when I drag and drop, absolutely nothing happens. The dotted gray border turns blue, but the files no longer appear below and do not begin the upload process. These .jpg images are in the 4-6 MB range (which I realize now is unnecessarily large, but not prohibitively). I am able to upload one-by-one using the browser uploader. There’s nothing visible, so I’m not sure a screen shot would be helpful.

@timethief, no private browser settings, AdBlockers or addons. It’s a mac, so I don’t run any security software.

    Thanks for everyone’s feedback.

An update: this evening I was able to drag and drop three files files successfully, just once, using Firefox. After that initial success, I was only able to drag and drop individually, which is still more than yesterday.

Safari let me drag and drop individual files, but not multiple.

  • Unknown's avatar

Since it did work for you once, and is working somewhat in Safari, I’m starting to think it’s a connection issue rather than a browser issue or WordPress.com bug. Do you see any difference in performance based on the size of the files?
