Why doesn't the sticky post create a sliding image header for me?

  • Unknown's avatar

I have tried everything. I am trying to have the Home Page slide a few images as in the example. I have followed all the steps, checking the sticky box in the edit/post and it doesn’t work for me.
I even tried making a static page and adding the [slideshow] code but it doesn’t look the same.
Can someone please help me? What am I missing? I love this theme but the real selling feature was the sliding images at the top. What am I doing wrong? Can someone point me to a step by step other than this:
“Featuring posts in a slider on your home page is easy. You just need sticky posts with Featured Images. Every sticky post you have (up to 10) that has a Featured Image (at least 888 pixels wide) attached will show up there. Easy!”

  • Hi there – I see you currently have one ‘sticky’ post, so you’ve figured out how to do that. Awesome! The next step is just to add a featured image to your sticky post. This is different than just inserting an image into the post. You actually have to set an image in the “Featured Image” module under the post editing window. Here are instructions for how to do that:
    Featured Images

Make sure to use a big image. Once you’ve done that, it will show up in the slider.

Let me know if you still have any trouble!

Thank you so much Eurello, but it still didn’t work. Not sure what I’m missing? I’ll leave the post there so you can see. I added the balloon image.

    Thank you!!!!

  • It’s too small – that image is 720 × 576px and it needs to be at least 888px wide. For example, try using grayii.jpg as the featured image, just to see what it will look like – that one’s 1000px wide, so it should work.

awesome! wow. that’s so great! and then if i post most (up to 10) it will scroll for me? automatically?

    COOL! THANK YOU SO MUCH!

  • Yep! It’s a pretty cool theme, indeed. :)

Have fun, and let us know if you need any more help with it!

    Hi again!

Ok, just to clear some things up…. what if I don’t want the photo to be clicked on? I know it’s a feature image that I upload to a Sticky Post, but what if I don’t want someone to click on it and see an empty post?

Also, there’s an odd black box that appears on the bottom left of my images on the website, how do I remove that? Or is it a place to put something interesting? A quote, a name etc?

Thanks so much again! (btw giving you a great review!)

Ok, I made some images more than 888 but then it doesn’t show up right, so really it has to be exactly 888 not “more than” 888 if we want it to look right. Is that correct?

    “Learn by doing!”

The slider isn’t really designed to just show photos on their own. It’s meant to highlight your posts. One thing you can do is just insert the image itself right in the post, in addition to setting it as “featured.” Then, when people click through, they’ll just get the image on its own page.

Also, there’s an odd black box that appears on the bottom left of my images on the website, how do I remove that? Or is it a place to put something interesting? A quote, a name etc?

That’s where your post title would show up, but your sticky posts are untitled. You can add titles (or add whatever you want in the title field of the post – it will show up there). If you are interested, with the Custom Design upgrade, you could hide those black boxes using CSS:

Hmm, they should show up as long as they’re at least 888px wide. If you want to put those images back, I’m happy to take a look at them. :)

Thanks so much. I really do appreciate all of your help! I think I have it semi-figured out… there is just one thing that came up and I have no idea how it did? There’s a picture of a bunch of balloons at the very bottom of my home page? How do I remove that? How did it get there? I am also finding the widget for footer doesn’t work, if I wanted to put something at the bottom there…

    Hi downtoterra,

I hope you don’t mind, but I’m stepping in for Elizabeth here.

For your first issue, with the balloons:
The Forever theme displays the newest post with the quote format in the footer. Right now, that’s http://downtoterra.com/2012/10/23/terra-showed-me-that-reality-can-be-even-more-exciting-than-the-dream/

If you go to the post editor, you’ll see Quote checked in the box on the right:
    http://cl.ly/image/17171v253Y2Q

If you change that, or delete that post, it will revert to the next newest Quote post.

As for your widgets, you should be able to use footer widgets if you restrict them Footer Area Widget One.

For more information about the Forever theme, see:

Thanks so much Jackie. However, I think there may be a glitch or something because I never put anything in the footer and yet that image is there. Also, I checked the widgets and there is nothing in any of the Footer sections, so I’m not sure how to remove something that is not there.

Is there a way this image could be tagged or something for Footer? I just don’t know how it got there?

    Thanks again!
    Terra

    downtoterra,

It’s not a glitch – it’s how this theme works. In the theme information page I linked previous, see this section:
    http://cl.ly/image/1n112l1K2q1I

In your case, the post http://downtoterra.com/2012/10/23/terra-showed-me-that-reality-can-be-even-more-exciting-than-the-dream/ is designated with the Quote post format. As the newest post with that format, it automatically appears in your footer, and without access to custom CSS through our Custom Design upgrade, the only way you can change that is to not have any posts with the Quote format.

In other words, this is the theme’s default setting, not something you would find in your widgets.

Got it! Thanks so much. That makes sense. Ok, all fixed!

I know, I totally need to upgrade but I need to learn bit more first, but planning on it for sure.

    Thanks!

    Hi again,

    Glad to help!

FYI, there’s no need to upgrade unless you want to modify that section of the theme. You can easily fix it for free by just changing the post formats for those quote posts.
