“Thank You VERY MUCH for answering!
As you might expect, I am ultra ‘new’ to this WORDPRESS software and I find myself SWAMPED with questions!
(I’m afraid to ‘investigate much’ or ‘press’ tabs too much because I’ve done this and then I don’t know how to ‘undo’ what I mistakenly changed.

Unfortunately, the Tutorial about WORDPRESS don’t answer my questions because I am think I am less than a FIRST-GRADER when it comes to ‘understanding’ this lingo.

DO YOU KNOW WHERE I MIGHT GET GOOD INSTRUCTION SO I CAN LEARN AND NAVIGATE THIS WORDPRESS?

My Columbia, Mo library touts using http://www.lynda.com for Various topics.
What do you think ~ is Lynda.com viable?

    I have s-o-o-o many questions I don’t now what I don’t know.

Hi there @jenlewis0121 – unless the tutorials are specific to WordPressdotcom it might be even more confusing. There are two flavors of WP; WPdotcom where we are, and the standalone WP software. Here’s more on that: https://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

No doubt that like anything new, there’s a learning curve involved. Fortunately, there are a lot of resources available to you:
    https://en.support.wordpress.com/start/
    https://learn.wordpress.com/
    https://dailypost.wordpress.com/blogging-university/blogging-fundamentals/
And of course the community forums and Staff are here to help answer your questions as well.

As far as getting your Sharing buttons set up, is this the Support doc you are following to do so? https://en.support.wordpress.com/sharing/

  • Unknown's avatar

The above ‘link’ isn’t clear to me!
THIS Tutorial, (AND ALL OF THE ONES I’VE VIEWED )go w-a-y too fast for me to even begin to understand.
UNLESS someone actually SHOWS me stuff!! In that kind of “question and answer format’ I can get it!!

    Most Respectfully ,

    Jennifer

@jenlewis1021 – then you’ll want to take some time and look at the learning links I provided in my earlier reply, especially https://learn.wordpress.com/

    Best wishes.

No – I haven’t tried using any ‘support doc in order to set-up my SHARING BUTTONS. (I simply tried to figure it out myself by going to Appearance, then Sharing.)

However, I just don’t understand how “View” ‘Enable’, or Inactive’ works. I HONESTLY do NEED a ‘hands-on’ learning in order to get it! (THE WORDPRESS Tutorial videos just go w-a-y fast for me to even start to grasp anything she says.

Hi again, there are step-by-step text instructions in the support doc just below the video.

    Hi Jennifer,

There is definitely a learning curve to WordPress.com but, as JenT noted, we’re here to help with questions that come up along the way.

To get started: Navigate to My Sites in the top left of WordPress.com.

You will find different options for editing and configuring your site in the left sidebar of the resulting page. These options are grouped up into three main categories: Publish, Personalize, and Configure.

“Sharing” can be found under the Configure group. Navigate to the Sharing Buttons option in the top bar to edit the icons that appear beneath your posts:

    https://wordpress.com/sharing/buttons/jenniferkaylewis.wordpress.com

“Edit sharing buttons” from the above page and then click each button to add/remove them from your list of icons.

The documentation that JenT linked to previously has a handy video that walks through the above steps, also:

    Add Social Share Buttons

Let us know how you get on with that. :)

I also recommend our self-guided “Blogging Fundamentals” course. You can “Sign up for this course” on the following page and will be sent an assignment each day:

    1. I just tried to add ALL available ‘Buttons’ to my last post:
    PORTRAIT OF A FARMER
My page where I CHOOSE Buttons says:
    * SHARING SETTINGS
    * PUBLICIZE SETTINGS
    * AVAILABLE SERVICES, (drag and drop)
    * ENABLE SERVICES
    * PREVIEW
When I went to ck. my posts as others see it, (Preview) NOTHING APPEARED!
    IS IT THIS LIBRETTO THEME?

    2. Also, the Sharing page says, “Buttons will be hidden behind a Sharing Button; but their is NO Sharing Button showing.

2a. Why does the Error Msg keep saying, ” Ooops it appears you have an invalid FB url.” (I ONLY have ONE FB acct. I DID try to activate the URL two diff. times. Is that the problem? It also says at the bottom of my posts ‘invalid’ URL. PLEASE PLEASE, CAN YOU TAKE wrong message OFF?

    3. I am Debating on Registering my site to http://www.jenniferkaylewis.com. (for the $18. I get a message that my FULL name IS available.)
Is that advisable? Why, or why not?

    4. Which FOLLOW Button(s) do I advise people to ‘click’ the Blue Button or the Gray Button. BOTH appear at the bottom of my posts.

WHY DON’T YOU JUST FLY HERE AND HELP ME LEARN THIS PROGRAM?
LOL (but, it would be great!!)

    Hi there,

Let’s go through these one by one. :)

    1. I just tried to add ALL available ‘Buttons’ to my last post:
    PORTRAIT OF A FARMER

You’re right that the sharing buttons won’t display when previewing your post, however, you’ll see them when you actually visit the post and scroll to the very bottom:

    https://jenniferkaylewis.wordpress.com/2016/08/03/portrait-of-a-farmer/

It’s not technically possible for us to display all elements that will appear on your post (such as the sharing buttons) in its preview but you will get a general idea about how the content will display.

    2. Also, the Sharing page says, “Buttons will be hidden behind a Sharing Button; but their is NO Sharing Button showing.

You’ll see the “More” button alongside your other social networks when visiting your posts directly.

The Facebook Page Plugin widget can only be used with pages and not profiles. You’re seeing an error as you have added a link to your personal profile to that widget, and it cannot be parsed.

If you don’t have a Facebook page then I recommend removing that widget completely.

    3. I am Debating on Registering my site to http://www.jenniferkaylewis.com. (for the $18. I get a message that my FULL name IS available.)
Is that advisable? Why, or why not?

A custom domain like jenniferkaylewis.com can make your site look more professional in the eyes of some people. It also helps you to showcase and claim your site as your own personal home on the web.

Your free site address, jenniferkaylewis.wordpress.com, is yours for as long as you want it and, if you’re happy with it for the time being, you may want to finish setting your site up before upgrading to a domain.

    4. Which FOLLOW Button(s) do I advise people to ‘click’ the Blue Button or the Gray Button. BOTH appear at the bottom of my posts.

The blue button can only be used by those who are logged into WordPress.com while the grey button can be used by anyone visiting your site, whether they’re logged into WordPress.com or not.

WHY DON’T YOU JUST FLY HERE AND HELP ME LEARN THIS PROGRAM?
LOL (but, it would be great!!)

Haha! :) Although that may not be possible, there is a big community of WordPress-ers spread out across the world.

You may want to see if there are any close by WordPress or blogging meetups:

    http://www.meetup.com/topics/wordpress/
    http://www.meetup.com/topics/blogs/

It’s also worth checking to see if there any nearby WordCamps to you. WordCamps are conferences where people gather to discuss and help others with WordPress:

    https://central.wordcamp.org/schedule/

Hope all of that information is helpful!
