Why don’t featured posts appear on my homepage?

New Year greetings! New year problems!

So I changed to a new theme for my basic portfolio site. I specifically chose the Rowling theme because it offered featured posts. Here is my site: susanjcunningham.com

I thought by using this option I could have a homepage with 5 or 6 “best of” my articles. I added a “featured” tag to some posts but the order on this new homepage remains (sigh!) reverse chronological order. I have no idea why the first post has sticky on it; I didn’t even give it a “featured” tag.

I also have too many posts on the homepage. I only want 5 or 6.

I welcome any solutions. I’m not wedded to this theme. Can’t go back to my old theme; it’s no longer listed. Could I create a page with a grid-like look that displays a half-dozen selected articles? Or could anyone recommend a theme that does this?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

That ‘featured’ has no effect at all. The only way to show a post on top is by making it sticky – https://wordpress.com/support/sticky-posts/

So what is the purpose of “featured”? And only one post on top?

I followed the link re sticky posts. I don’t have the sticky post option in my settings. So I have no idea why that first post has a sticky.

Thanks, @themagicrobot. I’m guessing I have to switch to a block theme, of which there are very few choices for a grid look. I think this describes my current theme:

    >>Many classic themes (but not all) include a “Featured Content” setting to highlight specific posts in a special way. You can verify if your classic theme has a featured content section by visiting the Customizer. Look for a “Featured Content” menu item.

Whatever “featured content” means here (a tag?), it doesn’t describe a way to highlight certain posts on a homepage. I guess there is no way to do this on a page?
