Why don’t my custom menus don’t appear in Twenty Eleven?

I have followed the help guide step-by-step to create custom menus for my page using the Twenty Eleven theme, but the menu items don’t appear (I have checked from multiple browsers).
Can anyone think what I might be doing wrong? It looks pretty straightforward.
