Why don't my photos display on my home page?

My photos are not displaying on my home page. They are just gray boxes but when I hover my curser over the box, the permalink shows up along with the title of the photo. The photo appears in a new window once I click on the permalink. I would like for the photo to appear on the front/home page too. Please help…I’m new to this.
