Why has my sidebar moved to the bottom?

  • Unknown's avatar

The sidebar has moved to the bottom of the screen on it’s own. I’m using the BonPress theme, and is described as having a left-hand sidebar. Yesterday it was appearing as it does in the live demo. However today I opened my blog to find that it’s now in full-width mode, and the sidebar is at the bottom, my menu is at the top (was on the left side before), so I don’t know what happened.

I’ve cleared my cookies and cache, I’ve done a forced refresh, I’ve checked my HTML code for any </div> items, I’ve logged in and out, I’ve switched to a different theme and back to BonPress–none of these attempts have changed anything.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi there. It is difficult for us to diagnose, as volunteers do not have access to private blogs.

By any chance, have you recently applied any Custom CSS or other custom features?

Sidebars and widgets in them do not fall to the bottom and display below posts and/or posts do not appear in sidebars unless

    (1) content has been imported into the blog

    (2) the blogger has been copying and pasting content from elsewhere, without using either icon 5 or icon 6 in Row 2 of the visual editor http://en.support.wordpress.com/visual-editor/#pasting-text

    (3) or the blogger has copied and pasted invalid HTML into a text widget or left an HTML tag open

See here for sorting this out > http://wpbtips.wordpress.com/2012/05/19/sidebar-at-the-bottom-and-related-issues/

    re: copying and pasting
Note you need to click the kitchen sink icon #15 at the end of Row 1 to have Row 2 appear. http://en.support.wordpress.com/visual-editor/#row-1 and then you need to use either icon 5 or 6 when copying an pasting.

Go here and enable this > Settings > Writing

I have not used any custom features (I have the basic, free account, no upgrades).

I’m new to blogging. So far I’ve only added one post and a couple pages. The post was pasted from Word, and I used the button to do so properly. I’ve also already enabled the option for WordPress to correct invalidly nested XHTML automatically.

I tried opening the blog in Internet Explorer, and the format appeared correctly, however the font was teeny… Opening it in Firefox and Chrome it still comes up full-width without the sidebar.

Thanks for your help, I’ll see what they say.

It’s simply a matter of reading the source code and they can do that. I syrongly suggfest you use Windows Live Writer rather than copying and pasting form WORD as WORD is not web compliant and constains extraneous formatting code. Hopefully, you edited your posts and use the Text (HTML) editor to detect any rogue code or open HTML tags in the posts, and you have checked any text widgets you have to be sure there are no open HTML tags in it.

YIKES! I’m visually challenged. Sorry about the mistakes above. Edit: “syrongly suggfest” was meant to be strongly suggest”

I changed my settings to public, so you should be able to view it now, to see if you see something different. I’ve tried deleting the post altogether and replaced it with a new post as a test, and there’s no change. So I don’t think there’s an issue with the post. I’ve done every help topic suggestion…could it be a browser issue?

@jancie1008 The theme you are using is Responsive, meaning the layout changes depending on the window size (It’s meant for showing content on small devices, such as phones and tablets).

Please make sure your window is wide enough to display the proper layout. As of right now, the sidebar appears on the left hand side of my screen when my window is large enough.

Wow. Yea, so I changed the aspect ratio on my monitor and that fixed the problem. Omg, that’s crazy…clearly I have much to learn. Thanks @andrewcpht!
