Why has the number of top post thumbnails been reduced to 10?

I would like to know why the maximum number of top post thumbnails widget has been reduced to 10? My blog very recently had 16 and now 6 are gone – poof! This feature was a huge asset considering this is a photography blog and generated alot of traffic to posts that new readers wouldn’t necessarily see otherwise. Paid subscriptions should support added features not tempt us with “only for now” ones that can arbitrarily removed without notification….

  • Hi there – actually, the limit has always been ten, only some wording to make this clearer has been added.

Then how was it possible that I had over 16 thumbnails clearly visible for over the last few months under this top posts widget? Do you have a work-around that I may install to regain the missing 6 or can you suggest some solution so that I may regain the full amount? This feature is integral to the overall composition of my homepage…

  • I just verified with our developer last week that the limit on the Top Posts and Pages widget has been ten – perhaps it was more than that in the past. If you would like to feature additional posts you could add them manually using an image widget.

The whole point – and the beauty of the top posts widget – is that WP calculates on a running basis which of my posts has the most likes and places them accordingly in the image grid. It seems a bit of a logistic nightmare on my part to try and figure out which next 10 posts have been most liked (NOT most viewed as per my “all time” stats) and then insert an image widget for each of them and then upkeep that statistic on a daily basis, never mind the fact that it would be next to impossible to try and format those same image widgets to look exactly like the top posts image grid I had in the first place. Is there not some code that I can insert somewhere to restore the image grid to more than 10, considering that my paid subscription is for a “customizable” 2011 theme that should let me “dive into CSS to make all the presentational changes (I) desire”? Thanks in advance for your help…

  • There isn’t a way for you to modify the number of top posts or pages displayed through CSS. They are selected through a mathematical algorithm and displayed by server-side code that interacts with the database – I’m afraid it isn’t something that can be altered with CSS code.

What else might you suggest? Are there any plans to change the number of maximum posts in this particular widget in the near future?

  • I’m afraid there aren’t any imminent plans to change the quantity of posts and pages displayed in that particular widget.

So basically WordPress is saying that this is just the way it is and can offer no further solutions or options regarding this particular problem?

  • I’ve proposed internally your idea to increase the maximum number of top posts and pages from 10 to 20. It may be considered in a future update to the widget.

In the meantime, one workaround could be to feature some of your own favourite posts and pages in image widgets. It would allow you to highlight some of the posts you feel are most worth showcasing for your visitors.

Thank you for considering this update – you’ll have plenty of happy photographers! You have given me the incentive to take the image widget idea one step further and link it to a page devoted to my own top 10. Invention truly is born of necessity but sometimes need a nudge…
