Why have all the files in my media library disappeared?

All the PDFs that I have uploading – and which have worked fine for several years – have suddenly disappeared. My media library stills lists them all, but when I try to view the attachment page, no link is there for the PDFs. Some of these have been up and available for years, and others were new and working as of last week.
