Why have readers log-in?
-
Why have readers log-in to a site? The meta widget gives the option. Jetpack’s offers a WP single sign-on. Jetpack site stats configuration asks about what kind of registered users should be counted in page view counts (does that mean non registered users aren’t counted at all?). Various plug-ins offer ways of people to register though other accounts such a facebook.
What is the purpose of having people log-in? How would you encourage them to do so, other than make them register to comment? Seems like an extra hoop to jump through.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

You are posting to the wrong support forum.
We provide support only for blogs being hosted WordPress.COM and not for WordPress.ORG software installs. WordPress.com and WordPress.org are completely separate and different http://support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/If you don’t have a username account at WordPress.ORG click http://wordpress.org/support/ and register one on the top right hand corner of the page that opens, so you can post to the support forums there and receive advice from WordPress.ORG bloggers.

The Reader is an RSS reader built in to the WordPress.com dashboard. If you aren’t IN WP.com, you can’t use it, but you can use any other RSS reader you like. It’s like you couldn’t use Google reader without signing into google.

My apologies. I really wish WordPress would make the differences between org and com more obvious. The two websites should be differently designed…or something.
I am familiar with the difference…I just forget which is which. Sorry.
