Why have to register just to "like" a comment?

  • Unknown's avatar

I have been having pretty good luck but I hardly ever get any “likes”
On comments and such. I finally realized that people have to register just to simply “like” a comment. This does not make much sense to me, Anyone know why this is done this way?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

I don’t know for certain, but one reason could be so that viewers can’t easily log onto different computers/devices and “like” their own (or other’s) posts.

On certain sites like YouTube, you can pay a 3rd-party company for “likes” on your content to make it seem more popular than it really is. WordPress makes you log in to like a post so it’s harder for publishers to buy “likes”, making the whole WordPress experience more authentic.

There is a strong reason and that would make sense, But the end result is non activity by people who do not want to register to just like a comment. I was not aware of this until one of my regular followers let me know. And I had been wondering why I was not receiving any activity whatsoever in that area.
The gentleman who contacted me is also a regular commenter and needs no log on to do so, (After initial login) and I thought the two logons would be tied together. Apparently not, As long as I understand then it all works for me.
    Thank you for your response.

So you’re saying that your follower has to log in again to like a post? That’s odd– I just tested this myself, and there was no need for me to login again. As far as I know, you only need to do the initial login.

Yes in fact we exchanged some emails and I had him try on some other posts which he had the same result. He is a avid follower and regular commenter. That struck me strange also.
But it also explains my lack of activity in my likes area.

    6. Select Done.

    For Internet Explorer:

    1. Click the Tools button.
    2. Click on Internet Options.
    3. Click the Privacy tab.
    4. Under Settings, move the slider to the top to block all cookies or to the bottom to allow all cookies,
    5. Click OK.

    Mozilla Firefox:

    1. Go to the Firefox drop-down menu.
    2. Select Preferences.
    3. Click Privacy.
    4. Set “Firefox will:” to Use custom settings for history.
    5. Check the box next to “Accept cookies from sites” to enable cookies.

    Hope this works!! :)

He may run in stealth mode I don’t know, But Thank you I will send him this information but If it was just cookies then he would have to log on to comment every time which he does not, Just to “like”.
I will pass this on to him to see if it helps, Thank you for the response.

Maybe a glitch in the software too????

Not a problem! And I wouldn’t rule out the possibility of a glitch, but I guess we’ll have to see how it goes! Here’s hoping it was just your follower in stealth mode. :)
