Why have updates changed format of site?

    I have just updated my website and even though I’m working from a Child Theme (or so I thought) the formatting has changed. This is the second time it has happened and while I do have online backup and am getting the site restored it has made me really nervous about doing more work on the site. I am working with Flat theme as the parent and I know there was some issue about there being two forms of Flat theme is this what’s causing the problem?
