Why have widgets disappeared from my blog sidebar?

  Why have widgets disappeared from my sidebar? I have a very simple blog that used to have the automatice widgets like Meta. Now I noticed that they have disappeared suddenly. I have done nothing but add posts. Can anyone help? I really want to add some more widgets, and did that, but nothing is showing up, not old or new.
