Why haven't my followers been updated?

Why haven’t my followers been updated? We have had thousands of new visitors in the past two weeks, but our total followers number has only been updated with the 40 or so who signed up to follow by email. When will you show the actual number of total followers, including Facebook, etc.?
Our URL is http://www.backinrivercity.com
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi Eve,
Your follower numbers appear to be updated. When I checked in your stats, I can see followers both on Facebook and Twitter as well as the 156 or so combined WordPress.com and email followers.
Let me know if you’re not seeing these or if you have any questions!

The numbers should be increased by at least 1000 because we have had thousands of new visitors to the site over the past two weeks. Please look at the stats of the site. Thank you!

Let me try to make this as clear as possible. We published a voters guide that drew in (and still is drawing in) several thousand views from people who had never visited the site before. If you look at the stats over the past several months, you can see the huge influx of new visitors and page views since July 15, when we began to publish installments of the guide. We know that not all “visitors” are new, and that many of the same people are coming back on successive days. It is beyond doubt, however, that our total reach has exceeded the 40 or so new followers that have been added as a result of their signing up to receive updates by email. What about the hundreds of new people who are being drawn to the site but who do not sign up for email subscriptions? Reflecting growth of new readers is obviously an important issue to bloggers – so what gives when my numbers aren’t showing this?

I understand that you have had quite a lot of traffic, however high traffic does not necessarily translate to followers. If you have gotten a lot of emails sent to you saying that you have gotten new followers and then when viewing your stats those followers have not been present, then that would indicate that there is something wrong with our stats. Sadly a lack of conversion from traffic to followers does not indicate a malfunction.
Has this been happening? Are there missing followers out of your stats? If so, could you please send some of their email addresses (they will appear on your end as [email redacted], so their privacy will be preserved) so that we can look in to the issue.

Please explain how WP defines a follower, especially as it pertains to Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn. I don’t understand why a website would not be able to show the actual traffic it receives in individual viewers. What if a person regularly reads a blog but doesn’t sign up as an email follower? I find this rather confusing. Thank you!

Sure, that’s not a problem.
A follower in Facebook is anyone who has chosen to like that page (for a Facebook Page) or anyone who is your friend for a typical Facebook account. Similarly, anyone who has followed your Twitter account is counted as a follower under the Twitter section in your stats.
In regards to your actual blog’s followers, you only get additional followers when someone chooses to receive automatic updates to your blog. They do so by clicking the follow button which appears on your blog (this follow button appears at the top of the blog for logged-in WordPress.com users, or at the bottom right hand corner for everyone else).
