Why is a spurious event showing in our event calendar?

  • Unknown's avatar

In Daylesfordrsl.org.au, the first item in the event calendar is ‘Vietnam Veterans Day’ 12th Feb 0818-0819. There is no such event.

Vietnam Veterans Day is in August and that is where the only such event is placed in Google Calendar for Daylesford RSL. I have taken screen snips to show that Google Calendar on the day along with the results of a search on Vietnam.

The widget is Upcoming Events. I cleared the Firefox cache – no difference. I then changed the calendar from showing 3 items to 4 items and saved. The spurious item is still there.

Please investigate and fix thank you.

This morning the reported spurious event entry had disappeared. However, later in the morning (presumably after 0818) it is back again with today’s date.

If it occurs again tomorrow I am going to remove the event calendar as it is obviously not going to be fixed anytime soon. So it will not be available for inspection after that.

    Hi there,

I took a look at the upcoming events in your site’s sidebar, and I didn’t see that incorrect event showing up there. I also checked your calendar’s feed, and I only see the event with the correct date in August.

It looks like the issue sorted itself out, but if you see it pop up again please let me know. You can also make a screenshot of the incorrect event as it appears in your sidebar, so we can take a look at it. (You can upload screenshots to your Media Library under Media > Add New in your dashboard, or you can use an online service like Snaggy.)

Please let me know if I can provide any further help with this.

I suspended the widget yesterday Rachel because the spurious entry was there for the 3rd day. Then late yesterday I thought to try deleting the widget and re-creating with getting the code afresh from Google Calendar.

This morning that has worked. So I am hopeful.

    Thank you.

I’m glad it’s working for you now. :) If you need any further help with this widget, please let us know.

Rachel, this issue has resurfaced. Please investigate. Thank you, Ken

  • Hi Kenny,

As Rachel is not here at the moment, I wanted to confirm, is it the Vietnam Veterans Day listing again, as I have circled here?

    Thanks for the additional info!

Jerry, has this been fixed? I notice it is not appearing this morning but that may be because it is transient.

  • Hi Kenny,

I was just looking in to this (hoping to file a bug report) and noticed the same as well. Can you recall if anything changed on your end? Could be an edit to the calendar in Google, or a change to the site itself?

Even if unrelated, it could offer a bit of a clue.

Maybe we got lucky, and for once in the history of time, a thing magically fixed itself! Probably not, though, so let me know if it happens again, in any event. :)

G’day Jerry. Unfortunately nothing changed. I haven’t even logged into the site since my previous email. Nor in Google calendar – which of course could be the cause although before I reported the issue originally I did delete the original calendar entry and create a new one to be on the safe side.

A bit like the Google map problem I reported last year. That took a bit of finding I gather.

    Thanks, Ken

  • These kind of issues can be a little tricky to figure out, as it involves something we don’t control (the stuff on Google’s end, in this case) and they often make changes that we are unaware of until we see people having problems with our connection to it.

    Fingers crossed. :)

    It’s back again Jerry.

  • Hi Kenny,

I took a look at your site, and bafflingly it is showing up fine for me again: https://cloudup.com/cq0gGMXhnXG

Next time you see it listing that incorrect event, can you take a screenshot of the widget on your site, and upload it to the media library?

After it is uploaded, click on the “Edit” link next to the upload thumbnail. On the next page, copy the file URL (found in the “Save” box in the upper right) and then paste the URL here.

In the meantime, I am going to have our engineering team take a closer look here, and I will update you when I know more.

    Thanks for your patience. :)

  • Hi Kenny,

Out of curiosity, have you tried deleting the event in your Google calendar, and then adding it back again to see if that clears the issue?

  • Unknown's avatar

Yes, read my post about 3 back. And btw it is there again.

  • Gotcha, sorry that I had missed that in our back and forth… just trying to figure out what makes this event unique from the others, which appear to function correctly.

One question I had: Is it the only all day event you have on that calendar? Meaning that everything on your calendar has a definite start-end time (11:00 – 14:00, for example) but this one event does not?

Hoping that is the case, which gives me some ideas as to why we see it intermittently.

Also, I will likely file a bug report today on this issue, but as it’s the weekend, it may not be picked up by our engineering team right away.

Thanks again for the info and for your patience. :)

Jerry, the VetRide event showing now is also an all day event albeit multi- all day. Sep 1-6 has another all day though it is also multi-day.

    Ken

  • Hi Kenny,

I have gathered up all the odd behavior I’ve spotted around that event, and filed a bug report around your issue.

Our engineering team take a closer look here, and I will update you when I know more.

Thanks again for your help. :)

Any chance of a resolution in the next week? We are nearly at Australia’s main war commemoration day (25 April) and that spurious Vietnam Vets entry that shows up every day at a certain time is blocking another key date.

    Regards,, Ken
