Why is Gallery rejecting small jpeg images with error message HTTP error?

  I cannot export jpegs from Lightroom or Photoshop CC for the last 2 days. Everything was working fine until a few days ago the appearance of the site changed when I opened the WP site. The images are less than 1 megabyte, unaltered, RGB images at 8 bits depth. When I try to upload to the Gallery for later use I get the error message HTTP error. How do I deal with this?

  There is a post editor with all features the post editor at https://wordpress.com/post/ lacks and you can use right on the dashboard of your own blog.

  There has been a change to the post editor interface at https://wordpress.com/post/ and Staff are recommending that we bypass the New Dash in favor of posting directly on our sites at Dashboard > Posts > Add New. https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/where-did-the-add-media-button-go?replies=2#post-1927520

  There will be further new iterations of the post editor at https://wordpress.com/post/ and that is why the advice is to go to Dashboard > Post > Add New
