Why is image #1 missing in posts emailed to blog followers via Follow widget

  • Unknown's avatar

I use the Follow Blog Widget for people to subscribe receive my blog via email. Lately the first and most important image in each post is not coming in the email. Instead all that shows is the caption, then the post text. As an artist, this is a big problem.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Could it have anything to do with uploading several images, then deleting one that might have appeared first but shouldn’t be?

    Thanks!

    Hi there,

That is very strange! Could you maybe take a screenshot of the email that is going out so that I could see what is happening? You can upload it to your Media Library and paste the link right here.

Here’s some information about how to take screenshots in case you’re not familiar with the process:

Thank you! Yes. Here are links to the screenshots of the 2 emails and of the actual blog posts. You’ll see the emails only have the captions but the posts have the images.

Darn! The latest post the same thing happened!!!! Here are the two latest ones:

    http://wp.me/aYe1-2mD

This is really distressing. I hope we can come up with a solution!

PS. I tried sending a copy of the last post, with some intro text before the first image to see if that helped but again, no image.

  • Unknown's avatar

Thanks for sending over those screenshots! I’ve taken that and put it in front of some of our developers and they are taking a look now.

As soon as I have any additional information, I will let you know!

Thank you. In addition to the first image (my best sketch for that post) not showing up in the email, they’re also not showing up in the WP Reader! I want to keep posting but why bother if the one piece of art I’m trying to send out is invisible to my interested readers? I’ve compared the html of posts with and without the first image showing and it appears identical. And all of the files in the current group of posts were scanned and uploaded at the same time to my library library.

Is there a way to create a test post that only comes to me by email? Is there a way to email my subscribers with the sketches without creating an extra post?

If I change my feed setting to “summary only” will it affect my email subscriber feed (will they now get only a summary so they know to click to read online) or does that only affect rss readers? Or is there another way to change it so it is only a summary?

I’m so sad my blog is broken. I hope your developers can figure out a fix quickly.

I really appreciate your responsiveness meanwhile! Please stay in touch.
    Thank you!

    Hi Jana,

I think we might have found the issue. It looks like when you are uploading the image, you are including the dimensions of it. Those dimensions are including the ” symbol, which is quite normal of course, but it appears to be causing some issues because of where it is getting included in the emails.

Can you try next time you post something not including any quotes? If you want to include the dimensions, just specify “inches” or just “in?”

I know it sounds silly, but this may be it.

    Thanks so much!

It’s a good thought, but I tried updating the two most recent, substituting “in” for ” and then looked at them again in the WP Reader and the images are still not showing. Also, other recent posts had ” in the image description and caption, but they do show up, such as this one:
    http://wp.me/pYe1-2l6
which was the last one that showed the primary image.

Is there a way to do a dummy test without spamming my readers?

Also, one other thing…the image descriptions are added as Lightroom metadata before exporting from Lightroom to a jpg. But I’ve been doing that for months so that hasn’t changed. In fact the only thing that changed on my end with this series of posts was uploading all the scans at once and then inserting them, instead of uploading just a few for a particular post.

    Did something change in WP?

The bit that is problematic appears to be the image Alt rather than the description or the caption. If you could make sure the quotation mark isn’t in there, that would be best.

We are constantly updating the code for WordPress.com. Every day there are dozens of updates which are designed to improve the overall experience of our customers. Sometimes however, this can lead to little issues like problems with a single quotation mark in an image’s Alt description wrecking a bit of havoc. It shouldn’t, but things sometimes happen.

Yay! Today’s post, minus quote marks, worked properly and posted with the image! THANK YOU SO MUCH!

OH! But sadly, on the WP Reader the sketch still doesn’t appear, just a gallery of photos much further down the page. WHY?

    Hi Jana,

I took a look at all of your posts, and it is actually a function of what else is in your post which controls what appears on the reader.

The Reader is set to try and grab the thing which most people are going to find most interesting. For most posts, that item is going to be a post’s gallery or its video. If there aren’t either of those, then the Reader will display an image from the post. Then if there are no images, it just displays the text.

That’s why your artwork is sometimes getting over-ridden, because you’ve got galleries or videos in the post as well. Unfortunately there’s no way to turn off that setting, it’s baked in to how the Reader works. I’m sorry for that inconvenience!

  • Unknown's avatar

That makes sense. Glad to know it’s a “feature” not a “bug” even though it kinda is for me. Would setting a “feature” image work for the reader — if that was set would it use it or does it always default to the galleries/videos?

One other unrelated question re galleries vs displaying images using the alignment left, right, center option. The latter always seems difficult and buggy and I’m guessing isn’t really meant to be used to line up 3 thumbnail images left to right. Is it always best to do it as a gallery instead or is there a trick to using the alignment menu with images?

  • Unknown's avatar

Honestly, I’m not entirely sure if a single image set as a featured image will over-ride the galleries/videos. I’ll give it a test and get back to you!

As to your other questions, you’re absolutely right. Trying to align two or more images in a row is a bit of a nightmare. I always recommend that people just throw them into a gallery and just go from there because it will save them so much frustration and heartache. The gallery is designed for that, whereas the editor really isn’t I’m afraid.

  • Unknown's avatar

I’ve double checked, and setting a featured image does not over-ride the galleries or videos in the reader I’m sad to say.

    Sorry!
